[Proposal] Bring PK Subban back to the North next year: VANCOUVER - NJ

Recommended Posts

That blog referred to in the OP is suggesting to retain on Subban at 50% to get a pick.

Not sure why they’d want 3 cap dumps in return if they think they can get a pick instead.  It’s also 3 contract spots at forward vs clearing 1 entirely.  NJD has been sitting and moving out veterans to create spots for their young players.

Shero lost his job in part because he was not involving their analytics department enough in his decisions.  Ownership has grown the department since. Don’t see how they’d have interest in any.

Don’t think Benning makes the trade either.  They are looking to compete in 2 years.  They need to build their D-corps in particular.  1-year of Subban is another delay in developing a D to be ready to compete immediately once the window truly opens up.

Sorry, not trading Virtanen( a #6 pick) + 3rd for a 9million dollars PK Subban that "might work" as our bottom pairing. Not like NJ Devils will take the deal any way; stop underestimating how unplayble Ericsson is. The only reason we have been playing him at all the last few years is because how stubborn Green/Benning is. At this point, if NJ had extra cap space of 3-4 million, they should use it to grab a 1st or 2nd round pick, that's how the market is nowadays.

The once we pay Ericsson's bonus on July 1st, he will be traded. I have seen that for 3-4 years, eh?

Myers had more points last year, and his PGP is about the same this year.    Subban doesn't kill penalties well, and even after his Norris (which wasn't at all that impressive really),  was behind Weber in virtually any important defensive category at the time.   He's not that good.   An example of a horror story when it comes to bridge contracts and how badly they can backfire.    Then again even a long term deal might have done the same thing.   No thanks.   Zero interest.   Now that i've said that watch JB bring him in for 6 x 6 once he's a UFA lol.

I don't think this idea is as crazy as some people think.
He's been a lot better this year than last year.

If LE retires, there are other things we can do with the cap space.   Like make a trade with TB for Palat for peanuts after the ED (if he's still around)... we are almost there, more then anything as long as we don't do anything stupid to ruin the cap all over and the caps spent wisely (D, C, LW) the team should get a massive boost.

I would rather resign Hamonic and Tryamkin, than take on Subban.

Right side D next season:

Schmidt

Hamonic

Myers

Tryamkin

I was big on bringing PK here in the past, but I don't think that works now, rather do the above.

When Jim likes a certain player, he doesn't move off it. JB seems to circle back on guys even if they aren't at their top playing performance anymore.

Considering that Loui is just sitting rotting away, rather have a guy come in who can still give some meaningful minutes. Perhaps his personality and loudness might take away some attention away from Hughes.

You can dislike Subban's personalitya nd his contract, but still a very good guy and can still play the game in a meaningful matter. I'd explore this deal.

You're right. It's probably better to wait for Loui to retire. But, I'm a Devils fan, and the whole narrative that Subban can't play anymore just isn't true.

I agree re: "he doesn't move off it," and I was actually forgetting about the comments he made in 2016:

Quote

Benning might have crossed the line further during the interview when he revealed the Canucks have contacted Montreal about acquiring star defenceman P.K. Subban, who is signed through the 2021-22 season.

"The price would be really high to acquire a player like that," Benning said. "We've done our due diligence, like we do with all the players who are out there. But it's a long way from completing a trade like that."

To Vancouver: PK Subban

To NJ: Loui Eriksson after his signing bonus is paid; Jake Virtanen; Roussel or Beagle at 50% off; a 3rd round pick

Why?

Total real dollar amount going to NJ: 1 + 3.4 + 1.5 = 5.9

Total real dollar amount coming to Vancouver = 8

Total cap hit going to NJ: 6 + 2.55 + 1.5 = 11

Total cap hit going to Vancouver: 9

Eriksson's cap hit is much larger than his dollar amount this coming year, which might make him moveable with the right deal. NJ and NJ fans do not want Subban on the team - and for fair reason, he's making 8 million a year and he's playing like a bottom pairing PP specialist... which ... is what the Canucks could play him as.

Right now the Canucks have Eriksson doing nothing. Subban is RHed, gritty, big defenseman. He's been bad in NJ but still has a lot of tools... I know he's too old to likely bounceback completely, but maybe one sheltered year is possible - for example keeping him AWAY from the penalty kill. He's still at about a .5 PPG pace these days, and could give the 2nd PP unit some fire power.

General analysis says NJ is trying to cute costs, even moving Kulikov's minor 1.15M pro-rated salary at the deadline (plus vets Zajac and Palmieri). Their owner is a billionaire who people think doesn't care much about hockey.

This deal saves their owner 2.1 million next year and Jake COULD still turn it around. Neither Jake or PK are going to turn it around in their current environments.

This NJ blog covers people general sentiment around Subban in NJ, but this quote sums it up pretty good:

And:

This deal keeps NJ above cap floor while saving them real dollars is a key point.

Notably all these players contracts run out next year, so it's a 1-year trial for all. Not a lot of commitment on either side.

This deal gives the Canucks some additional cap to re-structure their bottom-6.

I used to keep a habit of keeping up with all new CBA and contract rules, but with COVID I have been thrown for a loop and a bit out of date. Open to critique around cap things I may have missed.

My concern with Subban is that the guy has a tendency to rub teammates the wrong way from what I understand.  This is what was rumored to have happened in both Montreal and Nashville.

My best guess is that the Canucks will try and go after David Savard or Adam Larsson.   If we’re talking New Jersey, I wouls t be surprised if Benning goes after Ryan Murray given Murray’s age and style of play (defensive oriented).  Murray might be able to be had at more favorable money and term due to his injury history.

There's too many contracts going one way. What I would suggest would be:

To Vancouver, Subban, 2 million retained, 5th round pick

To NJ, LE, Virtanen, 4th round pick

One year contracts all round. NJ saves actual cash and unload a problem contract, Canucks offload 2 problem contracts and save about 1.5 million on cap.

Don't know if it makes the Canucks any stronger, but it would be a one year experiment to see if Subban fits here.

Doesn't look worth it for NJD.  Subban still plays over 22 minutes for them.  Eriksson pretty much spent the season on the taxi squad and Virtanen is under investigation.

Last year, bonuses were still paid on 1 July despite the NHL season not being completed. Didn't see any mention that it would  be different for this season.  If bonuses are indeed paid on 1 July New Jersey wouldn't save actual cash.   It would cost them nearly 4.5M more to make that deal.

Subban has a 6M bonus and only 2M of salary.  Eriksson 1M in bonus with 3M in salary left.  Virtanen has 3M in salary left after a 400K bonus.

2M retained is 22.2%.   So Devils pay 6M + 444K for Subban to not play for them.  Take another 3M for Eriksson and another 3M for Virtanen.  Total cost to NJD 12.44M vs just keeping Subban at 8M.

Vancouver pays the bonuses to Eriksson + Virtanen = 1.4M and adds Subban at 1.55M = less than 3M.
