I remember one exercise at school when the English teacher asked us to draw a phyti

Stumped us all

ph = f as in philosophy

y = i as in cynical

ti = sh as in fiction

Fish, ofc, was the answer

Your teacher sounds like a jerk.

Interesting topic, and based on it I just realized something...

How come it's "receive"/ "conceive"/ "perceive" but it's "sieve"?  I get that the rule is "I before E except after C", but in this case, the "S" sounds as a "C" does in the previous 3 words, so it's weird as to why its spelling changed when it literally sounds the same.

Also, back on topic, its (possessive, something belonging to "it")/ it's (it is).

English is a warped yet awesome language.

Here's an interesting one: Take the series of letters ghghgh......

The first gh is pronounced as it would be in the word "Hiccough"....the second gh as it would be in the word "Edinburgh" and the third gh as it would be for "cough"....

The pronunciation would be "puff".....

The one I always have fun with when I see it is complimentary instead of complementary

As in ....

Hoglander is a great complimentary player for Horvat  ...... to which I reply  "yes, I have noticed that he praises Bo a lot in these interviews"

Rush to post (without reading first) imo is the #1 reason

Spellcheck won't pick up the word-completion mistakes, only reading before hitting "submit" can pick many up

Also, speech to text can distort things (I have seen some gibberish after I have tried that)

(The other one is reigns instead of reins ...as in: "Hughes is taking the reigns this season". Really? Does Green know?)

Rains

cough, cuff and calf

It depends if its a Scotsman, an Irish man, or an English man, who says it.

And really when you think about it, all 3 words are used in all 3 dialects (nationalities) in a different order

Lous.....Lou's.....Loos.....Loo's.....lose. Lose is misspelled regularly on CDC. Is that an indictment of our education system or an ELC thing?

Lose. Did you lose your mind yet?  I win, you lose.  We might lose a good prospect in the expansion draft.

Loose...... got loose. ....on the loose  ....loose fitting clothes. If you spell lose as loose, how the heck do you spell loose? Looose maybe?

Personally, I prefer the version of English that Ricky from Trailer Park Boys uses:

"You cops got a search warranty?"

"It's gorilla see, gorilla do"

"Bubbles passed that test with flying carpets"

"Beauty is in the eye when you hold her"

"What goes around is all around"

"It's just water under the fridge"

"It's denial and error"

"Friends with Benedicts"

"Get two birds stoned at once"

"It's not rocket appliances"

"It's supply and command"

"That's a whole different kettle and dish"

That is how I sang most of the songs of the 70 and 80's

Usually never used the exact words.....

30, 40 years later........Ooooohhh? That's the correct words! :picard:

"Scuse me, while I kiss this guy".....Jimi was a great guitarist, but the lyrics could have used some work....
