That would suck but that's the nature of the game.   Maybe add a rule where you sign a free agent for one year deal is not eligible for any trade for one year and if you resign that player the one-year deal next off-season then he becomes eligible for a trade only on the same team he resign with.  That would be the rule I would use to prevent teams from doing one-year deal just for trading asset if you knew that you might not be good next season.  It would be the same for bubbling playoff team where they would sell their asset for picks if they fell down unexpectedly.  I think that it would be a good rules for all teams and if you think you are close for the cup, it is a risky one-year deal where you cannot trade that player for one whole year just to unload that contract where it would dump their bad one-year contract on non-playoff team..  When you add this rules, all deadlines would become hockey trades, rather than buyer/seller.

One thought, I might add, if any player entering in their final year of contract is not permitted to be traded once the season starts unless he is signed to a contract extension deal then he becomes eligible to be traded at anytime but I'm not sure if that idea would become accepted.

Thoughts?

nah.

If you really want teams to prevent tanking, you need to have a trade deadlines by the start of training camp, rather than on late February/early March deadline day.   This will force teams to field a better team with a choice, signing a wash-up vets or allowing their young players play before the start of the season rather than signing free agents that they will have no use for. except to sell assets at the deadlines.   This will also force players to make their decision on whether to sign that organization is known for losing for more money.

Should just relegate Arizona and Buffalo to the AHL.  The threat of this happening also might make someone like Melnyk sell the team to someone who cares about winning rather than having to live off of foodstamps due to the relegation.

They made changes to the draft lottery to combat tanking.

A team cannot win the lottery more than twice in a five-year period. (Lottery wins prior to the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery are not applied towards this total.)

Ya and they have got serious traction out of rewarding specific franchises before putting those rules in place lol.

Lol.

Yep.  Funny how NJ and NYR got top picks recently.

Why would the NHL want McDavid in Deadmonton and not a big US market. As well as all those other 1st overalls going to Edmonton.

Main reason I don't believe it's a fixed lottery. The NHL is just slow to react like most politicians.

Juolevi, 2023 5th, 2024 6th, future considerations, $500 Best Buy card, half dozen left over egg rolls in Benning's fridge.

Don't forget they will need to retain salary, those left overs are worth it

That whole lottery system is a scam and fixed imo. It just created a way for the league to direct traffic on the top picks.

you're right, ernst & young, one of the biggest accounting firms on the planet, is going to jeopardize their entire business by agreeing to conduct a fixed lottery for the nhl.

it's all a big conspiracy. gary bettman is also the guy who decided to track people with microchips in their covid vaccines and was heavily involved with the secret cabal of cannibal lizards that were preying on children in that pizza restaurant's basement.

If Buffalo hopes to trade Eichel for any kind of decent return, regardless of the agent, they will need to retain salary and take conditional draft picks.  Eichel has five years left at 10 per.  And he’s got a serious neck injury!

As this drags on, Eichel’s value plummets further.

The surgery/injury status will mean a longer wait until he is deployable. Also, uncertainty of his abilities post surgery/rehab becomes more of a concern. I’m not a doctor but does all this waiting cause a potential permanent issues with his neck?

Buffalo is really crapping the bed by holding on to their ridiculous demands. This has become a total clown show.

It is actually largely in Eichel’s interests to tank his own trade value.

He doesn’t want his new team to strip itself of players/picks and make itself worse.

The risk is Buffalo just doesn’t trade him, but they can’t really afford to do that.  Do they want Eichel hanging around floating on the ice and making negative comments about the organization every time a mic is in front of him?
