I posted this in the what are you listening to - punk thread a couple of weeks ago.

Mike Burkett NOFX-and Tony Sly- No use for a Name-were best friends and like me they lost a lot of friends to substance abuse and suicide in particular.

Although the reason for Tony's death was never stated Mike seemed to suggest that he was using too many painkillers and alcohol after Back surgery.

When he talks about Tony's daughter still thinking her dad will come back that gets to me every time I listen to this song.

"Now I been lookin' for a job but it's hard to find
Down here it's just winners and losers and
Don't get caught on the wrong side of that line
Well I'm tired of comin' out on the losin' end
So honey, last night I met this guy
And I'm gonna do a little favour for him"

We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home

My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
I'd feel better dead

The Squeeze documentary 'Take Me, I'm Yours' provided some context to this tribute to the passing of Glenn Tilbrook's first girlfriend who had encouraged Glenn to answer Chris Difford's ad looking to form a band  20 years earlier.

As others have pointed out. The Simon & Garfunkel version was a warning.

Disturbed version is ticked off we didn't heed the warning.

Not the traditional idea of a tear jerker, but this song (written by Pete Seeger) uses lyrics taken from the book of Ecclesiastes and is often played (or recited) at funerals, Including my father's. (My mom actually read the passage)
