Gretzky resigns post with Oilers, reportedly joining TNT as analyst

Wayne Gretzky has resigned from his post as vice-chairman of the Edmonton Oilers after five years, he announced Tuesday via Twitter, and will join TNT as an analyst, according to Andrew Marchand of The New York Post.

"The Oilers, their fans, and the city of Edmonton have meant the world to me and my family for over four decades – and that will never end," Gretzky wrote in a statement. "Given the pandemic and other life changes, I realize I will not be able to dedicate the time nor effort needed to support this world-class organization."

The Great One will serve as lead analyst on the cable network's forthcoming studio show, per Marchand, which is in the works after the NHL and Turner Sports agreed to a seven-year TV rights deal late last month.

Marchand reports that Gretzky will be paid roughly $3 million per season by TNT, who scooped him up with recruitment help from friend Charles Barkley after the NHL legend failed to reach a deal with ESPN nearly three weeks ago.

Gretzky originally re-joined the Oilers in October 2016 as a partner and vice-chairman to owner Daryl Katz. Prior to that Gretzky had been out of the NHL in any official capacity for nearly seven years after his time as part-owner and head coach of the then-Phoenix Coyotes ended in 2009.

"This is a really great opportunity for me to get back into the game and have a chance to do what we all want to do, win a Stanley Cup," Gretzky said when re-joining the Oilers in 2016.

The announcement comes one day after Edmonton's season ended in a disappointing four-game sweep at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets.

Mario's comeback & off-ice exploits have had the style, pizzazz & staying power of later Aerosmith. Many great albums after their downfall & drug-escapades.

Wayne is more the legend-in-their-minds, Rollin' Stones. Wasting FOUR decades in vain pursuit of their earlier success. Constantly & criminally repackaging greatest hits compilations, and/or ripping off KD Lang ditties, in vain efforts to cash in & still appear relevant!

Tragic, that.

So, is this his way of saying, that he's embarrassed by their ineptitude??? ::D

Or maybe Gretzky sees the writing on the wall. He hasn't lit the world on fire with his coach strategies (PHX/AZ), nor Edmonton's management. In fact, it seems that whenever he's there, Gretzky's only significance is his name and past accolades.

I used to follow PHX before it became Arizona. The team was never anything special. It had one playoff run where they got swept. They never recovered after that. Gretzky may be a very good hockey player, but he is not a Dave Tippett, or even an Alain Vigneault.

I'm good with your analogy as well, let's just use both...Gretzky is lousy at coaching and management, and Edmonton generally sucks!!! ;)

Except the Penguins don't suck while later Aerosmith absolutely does.
