CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. (AP) — A New York high school is recalling copies of its yearbook because a graduating senior listed Adolf Hitler's autobiography as his favorite book within its pages.

 

Cambridge Junior-Senior High School stopped distributing the yearbook two days after it had started when it came to their attention that a student had cited “Mein Kampf” as his favorite book, the Times Union reported Wednesday.

The newspaper is not naming the student, but sent a message on Facebook to the likely profile of the student to ask if he or his parents would comment.

The book published in 1925 outlines the tenets of Nazism. Less than 10 years later, Hitler's National Socialist party won enough votes for him to be sworn in as German chancellor. Some 6 million Jewish people died under systematic persecution by the Nazis along with political opponents, queer people and people from other marginalized groups.

Cambridge Superintendent Douglas Silvernell said he was “horrified and extremely disappointed.”

He did not provide information about how the student's selection had not been caught as the yearbook was edited, but promised that the editing process would be improved going forward.

An Albany rabbi told the newspaper it was important to find out why the student chose to highlight the antisemitic work.

“It is very disheartening, especially given the heightened sensitivity we’ve been experiencing with racism and antisemitism and violence during the past year,” Rabbi Scott L. Shpeen said. “It certainly indicates we have a lot more work to do.”

Asked if the student had been disciplined, Silvernell said the school was consulting with its legal counsel.

The school is asking students to return the about 40 copies of the yearbook already distributed. In all, it cost more than $10,000 to print 145 copies. Silvernell said the school has asked the yearbook company to work with them to find a remedy.

Cambridge is located northeast of Albany, near the state's border with Vermont.

I suggest if you don't want to know people's answers, stop asking questions.

Simply liking a book is no proof of anti Semitism or anti anything for that matter.

Kid could be going into psychology, and that book is a good start on how some minds work.

This is a tough one.  Books are not bad, but the messages within the text certainly could be, especially if it's in the hands of children.  Then again, those who forget (or choose to ignore) history tend to repeat it's worst mistakes.  Sounds like the Rabbi in the article was correct in his belief we need to understand why a young person would make a certain book their favorite.

Couldn't the remedy just be cut out the section of the book or page he put that? Maybe the kid is a history buff i'm sure it is actually an interesting insight into one of the most evil men on the planet. Most likely just a high school kid trying to be funny though. I will admit the documentary I watched on Hitler was very interesting, the man almost took over the world.

The Yearbook staff should have noticed the submission students made, and this one snuck through because it wasn't bad enough.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the kid learned about it and then to be a jokester and troll people, put it as their favourite book, not necessarily to imply they agreed with it or anything. Teenagers are like that

Yeah seems like this is going to be a way bigger thing than it should, I still remember voting in my yearbook questionaire and trying to come up with joke answers. Just poor taste in humor.

yeah, but welcome to 2021. It has been a thing for years now where seemingly nobody considers context anymore.

I get it, could easily be summarized as a stupid 'teenage' joke - we all know that teenage brains are not fully developed yet and they act but don't necessarily 'think'. 

On the other hand, I could see how someone who has been a victim of racism would have a problem with this and at the very least it's a totally 'tone-deaf' move in today's day/age. 

 

No matter the case I believe the student's intentions need to be determined. 

How many times in the past were the perpetrators of horrendous crimes found out after the fact that there were clear signs in their past if only people had their eyes open to them?  Not saying this is the case, but at least rule it out.

A friend of mine did the same in our high school yearbook 20 years ago in Germany. We had several pages censored in it, but this particular bit was left untouched. Was good for a couple of laughs among dumb teenagers. Nothing more.

I think you'd get a lot of support for that these days, on the far left and far right. 

 

It seems like a big troll job by the little $&!#. Also seems like an over-reaction that got far more attention and likely does more damage had they just let it go. But the US does have free speech laws and sometimes this is the kind of thing you have to live with.

They should've recalled our yearbook, just absolutely riddled with errors and even mistyped the schools name.  They got my name right but dozens of students were misspelled and they screwed up the alphabetical order.

Having had face to face interviews with multiple suvivors of Auschwitz and Treblinka camps it's hard to accept anything around the final solution as a harmless prank.  Nothing can prepare you for or erase from your memory the first time you see a survivor roll up their sleeve and see the number tattooed on their arm.
