A fun alternate reality to think about is the one where the Canucks draft Makar instead of Pettersson in the 2017 draft. Benning reportedly had Makar ranked 1st in that draft. If that happened, we'd likely still be looking for a dynamic 1C, but our defense core would be set with two franchise players. Imagine adding Hughes AND Makar, to the same blueline, at the same time.

Edler - Makar

Hughes - Tanev

Each one would have a perfect veteran to be paired with in their rookie year. That top-4 alone would make us an extremely dynamic and deadly team.

maybe. I'd guess that costs us this years 2nd, and I'd hate that because there are so many good potential RHDs between 30 and 60 this year.

A healthy Roussel is an effective pest but he hasn't been the same since that knee rebuild.

But if we could get Zadorov for a prospect swap (Lind?) and we can move Rous' salary to Seattle for a 2nd that would bring some size we really need.

This years draft is going to be all over the place, due to lack of game access for the scouts anyways, so maybe this would be the year to trade it. we could also move someone like Schmidt, to recoup the 2nd + from a team like Ottawa

I like this idea too, but Seattle probably takes him from us if we don't protect him.

A trade for Zadorov does not have to happen until after the expansion draft if in fact the Kraken do not select him out of Chicago.

Rathobone looks to be a stud for sure. Hughes isn't a liability, thats just silly. I don't know where that comes from or why people say that.

An 11m contract would kill our internal cap structure

Colorado would have no choice but match and destroy their cap structure muhahaha

Lol

I think that is when Colarado doesnt match and then Sakic is known as a brilliant GM for knowing when to hold em and when to fold em lol

Canucks then become the laughing stock of the NHL for creating our own self implosion as Hughes and Petterson now all ask for 10m min

Eye for an Eye leads to blindness.

so do you really think Carolina is going to go after a Montreal player now? or that they wouldn't have if Bergevin had not tried an offer sheet?

Others teams will offer sheet our guys if it makes sense for them regardless of what Jim does.

Colorado is matching no matter what. They would never ever let him go and would gladly pay 11 mill if they have to.

Will be arguably the best dman in the league in a very short period of time. He is on a great team and could win multiple cups that has a young core. There is no reason for him to want to be out unless all he cares about is $$$ which I doubt. Even if you threw 12-13m at him The Avs would match it.

It would likely take 11M and the 4 1sts to make the Avs not match with these set of circumstances.

if you offer sheet Makar for 11M+ If I were the Avs would just offer sheet Petey for 8.7-10.9 and walk away with the 2 extra 1sts.

It would essentially be a trade of

Petey and four 1sts.

for Makar two 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd.

Avs probably get 2 lotto picks from us at least while we likely get late 1sts, 2nd and 3rd. IMO Avs win. Losing Makar sucks but they gain a lot of assets, Petey  and have a lot of D-depth. Byram will only get better.

The only player in the NHL worth $11 million is McJesus.  Draisaitl and MacKinnon are a bit further down.  Anyone else isn't worth more than $8 million.  Some players may be getting paid more than that, but they are overpaid, especially with a flat cap for the next few years.

You can't win a Cup paying guys $11 million.  It's never happened before.  You can get away with it with McJesus because he is the equivalent of 2 players.

Best thing for the Canucks is to fill all of their holes without handing out huge contracts.  A complete team is what is needed to win the Cup.  Use the Colorado model.  They only have one player earning more than $7 million.  Draft your best players, sign them to team friendly deals if you can, and use trades and free agency to fill holes without breaking the bank.

you make a good point, but I don't agree McBaby is worth two players, not when he can be game planned so well in the playoffs.

Happened to us when Gillis signed Backes to an offer sheet, and St Louis then offer sheeted Bernier.

OK. How does that prevent someone from offer sheeting Petey this year?
