Yeah I see what you mean about the validity of assessing him against high school competition. I don't know enough about skating to project him going forward but he does look to be quinn in some of those vids.

I'm sure it's very difficult to judge a player when they are in a far inferior league. As is it likely more difficult if they play in a far superior men's league. Fortunately there are people who make a living doing it and they know what to look for in a player.  If I remember correctly, Rathbone was playing in a inferior league and that might have been part of the reason we were able to steal him from that draft.

Quinn only plays one end of the ice.
Points are great, but a defensemen is supposed to play defence.
Im not saying Dobson is a better player, but he is a better dman.

Because those are important factors when judging a dmans attributes.

I like a dman that can put up points AND keep the puck out of the net.

I love Hughes. He is fantastic, but let’s be honest.   He is a horrible dman.   When it comes to actually playing defence, he sucks.

I disagree entirely. he sucked (debatably) this year. that doesn't negate the year before when he played his way into a top pair shutdown role and certainly doesn't dictate his future, either.

He played his way to the top line because our team has absolute dog Pooh for defence.
The guy is one dimensional as they come.

bad take.

Nope.
He is like an offensively effective Jordon Subban.
Straight up hot dogging all over the ice with zero regard for defence.
His rookie year was waaaaay better defensively.
This year he was obviously trying to put up points on a contract year.

Size/Weight has nothing to do with compete. Lack of size doesnt mean lack of compete. Who cares if Johnson is lighter he is known to be tenacious off the puck aswell from scouts. In fact even more so then MacT who has tendency to disappear and pop back up with a goal kinda like Boeser. Rather have a Kane/Petey type than a O'Reilly type anyday. We have only have two gamebreakers Petey and Hughes.

You havent watched his otten tape. You havent watched his petes tape when he switched to the wing, but hey keep &^@#ing hottaking

How do?  You haven’t added anything to the conversation as usual.........

He is offensively fantastic, while being piss poor defensively.
He was better last year, but still not great.
Where is the contradiction smart guy?

Grow up

Sorry.   Let me put on my homer goggles.

Hughes  is the best dman in the world!
It doesn’t even matter that he only cares about getting points!
OMG!  We must give him 10mill a year!

hughes had a tremendous year defensively as a rookie, especially as an undersized, offensively focused one. he struggled some this year (you claim hotdogging for a bigger payday, which might be the dumbest thing I've ever read here, I say there's a learning curve when opposing players learn your game).

saying nonsense like he's as bad as  jordan subban and whatever other hyperbolic garbage you want to come up with, and then saying "oh but he was better last year though" is not only a contradiction, but a clear demonstration of ridiculously poor insights.

Nobody is talking about the future.
Get a grip.
Today, he is a garbage defender.
It is what it is.  Grow up Peter Pan.
One day he might really focus on both ends of the ice.    I hope he does!   Right now, this season...... he did not.

No one said that. Only you. Second of all, this topic is about who we should pick at nine. If we cant this back in line then the mods should lock this down

Tremendous???  Hahahah.  Sure.  It was ok for an undersized rookie.

Of course there is a learning curve, and he definitely felt it.    Hahah.

And no, saying he was better defensively last year is not a contradiction.  It is truth.
And if you payed attention, his effort in that end was apparent.

Jesus man.  We all know what was meant by that.
This last season.  A small handful of weeks ago.
If you can’t keep up just say so and I’ll stop conversing with you

luckily my attention span is long enough that I'm able to actually observe the body of work and create a valid context before making absurdly premature judgments.
