RU SERIOUS
Stumbled across this interesting story from SportsNet ( https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/can-win-stanley-cup-without-top-3-draft-pick/ ) written just a few years ago "Can you win a Stanley Cup without a Top 3 draft pick?" which stated that if you "Go back 45 years, only two teams have won the Stanley Cup without a top-three draft pick on their roster." Based on this FACT, and given that the Canucks have no 1st thru 3rd first round picks on the team even though we have a few good players and potentially a few others coming up, would you assume that we should patiently wait and hope that all those up & comers are able to lead us to the promised land - OR - do you believe in that theory above and suggest that we sacrifice one or more of our top assets and try and snag a top 1st-3rd player (if available) ? appleboy
There is an occasional year where there is a special player at the top but in most drafts each organization has different outlooks on who is the best player. The Canucks wanted Petey and might have taken him top 3. This year is a prime example. A lot of the teams picking in the top ten this year may get exactly who they wanted. 1

48MPHSlapShot
That's an almost meaningless stat.
Crabcakes
How about, how many teams with top 3 picks have failed to win a cup? Edmonton.....Buffalo..... to start..... 1
Popular Post joe-max
The last team to win a Stanley Cup and have the letter "V" in the club name was 2001 "Colorado Avalanche". In other words: in 20 years no team with a "V" in its name has won a cup. That's zero percent. "L" and "P" on the other hand are pretty frequent cup winning letters. In order to increase their chances they should change the name of the franchise to "Pancouver Calucks", "Lancouver Capucks" or "Houston Bettmannlovers". You cannot win with the current name! 1

Vinny in Vancouver
Lol. This is why we sign Taylor Hall for a huge 2-year contract this off-season. Not only does it give us a top 6 winger, but as the OP said, it increases our chances to win a Cup the next 2 years, and the Taylor Hall draft luck gets us the 1 OA the next 2 drafts and gets us Wright and Bedard. 1

You watch the Vegas/Avs series and start to realize how far the Canucks have to go. IMHO they will be competing for a CUP in two years but they won’t be serious contenders. JM_
depends. Are Petey and Hughes considered top 3 quality?
Rick Blight
Going back to the 2003 draft there are still 48 top 3 overall picks playing in the NHL I think the odds of a team NOT having a former top 3 pick and winning the Cup would be extremely low. Kind of like saying that each of the past 45 Cup winners all had a goalie....kind of a meaningless stat. 1

VanCan2023
2021 NY Islanders say hi. They are a huge threat to win the cup. You do not need a stacked team to succeed. Most times less is more. You need average to a bit above average players, believing and buying into there system. Every player willing to go to war for each other. Can we sign Barry Trotz in a few years please!!! 1
