Popular Post Dumb Nuck
I was just looking at some lists of worst hockey nicknames ever and came to the conclusion that IMHO it has to be Huggy Bear. Sounds like he’s wearing diapers, at the very least makes the opposition laugh, terrible, terrible nick name. Sad thing is it also reflects our soft, fun to play against style, maybe when he and the team finally gets some toughness we can call him Grizzly. I also suggest Kermit for Travis’ nickname. Alflives
Huggy Bear is a character from Starsky and Hutch. Don’t know why Sutter called Quinn that name though.

Phil_314
Lol now that it's a reference it's not all that bad. Try these on for size: - Jose Theodore (Threeormore) - Patrick O'Sullivan (P.O.S.) - Sam Gagner (Gags) - Darren Puppa (Leafs goalie, a.k.a. Puppa Scoopa) - Patrik Hornqvist (Horny) - Marc Pouliot (Pou => pronounced "Poo") - Kyle Cumiskey (think about it) - Jesse Puljujarvi (Poolparty) - Mikael/ Markus Granlund (Granny) Side note, how did Bieksa get the nickname Juice? Apparently one day Quinn showed up wearing a shirt with a little bear logo on the breast...kinda like those alligator logos from the old Lacoste shirts I think. The players made fun of him and started calling him huggy bear after that.

Not sure. But I heard of 2 possible reasons. 1) he drinks pineapple juice. Hence juice. 2) he came back to training camp the next year and was ripped. Hence juice. Edit: Rick Dhaliwal @DhaliwalSports · Dec 18, 2018 Bieksa on SN 650 : Nickname 'Juice' came from Auldy. When I came to Winnipeg, I was 185 lbs. Next year I came in at 205 just jacked. Obviously Alex was saying "juice juice, you're on the juice you put 20lbs on" I said "its called hard work Alex you should try it" Edited June 24, 2021 by BPA 1 1

grandmaster
Since this is in Canucks Talk, let’s focus on some terrible Canuck nicknames: - “the steamer” - never liked this - “SOB” - really? - “Huggy Bear” - that really puts the opposition into fear! Lol - “the lotto line” - lottery & hockey, yeah makes a lot of sense - “Big Tuna” - there is obviously something gross involved here - “Missey” - terrible sounding - “Millsey” - see above - “Guddy” - sounds like a dead fish
-AJ-
While I don't really like "Huggy Bear", I do appreciate that it's at least a little bit original. Most nicknames are pretty meh.

Plus he was tough. Garth Butcher aka "the Strangler" has to be one of the coolest we've had ... these are funny names (above). I like Pete Peters name as a kid, thought it was hilarious. Conan the Bra-barian / Mike Keane - good stuff. Edited June 24, 2021 by IBatch

Sometimes short and sweet gets it done. Millsey and Guddy an example of that. Don't need to fluff it up. The lotto line is perfect. 6 40 & 9? You want your lucky numbers to strike big. SOB: another perfect one. Why mess with it, it came naturally and fits.

Googlie
My musings: The Eagle (after the UK ski-jumper, Eddie the Eagle) is so apt for Edler with his wingspan (although might better describe Myers - what is he, a Great Auk? ... Albatross is reserved for Eriksson) Honey Badger was one of the best (Tony Stretcher also good) Never liked "Tree" for Tryamkin - al sorts of negative connotations for a Russian ( think pylon) I liked "The Professor" for Larianov, also "Tank" for his sidekick (although morphed into "Vlad the Inhaler" for his fondness for hot dogs) For sure, Rathbone will be Bones, and Lockwood will be Woody While Nazzy was a great name, Burr and Kes were kinda bleh. As are Mysie, Millsy and Suttsy (Sudsy?) Motter isn't bad. Demmer is OK, I guess Hughes should be just "Q" ... shades of the Bond character inventing all sorts of lethal variations on everyday things - that's our boy!! 1
