[Discussion] Defensive Targets: Gavrikov and Cernak

Recommended Posts

Preferably, Shaw gets some time to establish his system before any major roster tweaking.   For now better to pass on these players cause no guarantees they will perform here - Schmidt; and unless the Canucks gets them reeeeal cheap.

Imo, just like Schmidt both of these players seems to be a product of the there teams system & (to a lesser degree) roster.

What, wait so you don't want better players because they can't guarantee they will perform here? Okay, that's the weirdest strategy I've ever heard of.

Like I said - preferably they figure out a system first, before any roster tweaking.  Schmidt's regression with the team vs his time in Vegas should provide some caution - good thing JB got him cheap.   I don't mind getting good players if they are a fit in our system - so pass for now with these suggested targets.

Yeah both of these guys would turn our defense right around.

He's the type of Dman we need though. And it wouldn't cost a king's ransom to acquire him. I'm not suggesting that he can be had for free, but we wouldn't have to flip our 9th pick. Maybe a 3rd and a B-level prospect (as approximate value)? He's a minute munching shutdown D man that can play in the top-4. He's almost an Edler replacement.

Oh yeah hed definitely replace edler but would be far better than edler ever did. Wouldnt mind even Jouveli and a 3rd for him.

That's a trade I would do. It's more than fair. Maybe you try to change the 3rd into a 4th, but as a premise, it's a fair deal. With respect to Juolevi, I'd have no issue in trading him if it meant acquiring Gavrikov. Our defence is too easy to play against, and Gavrikov fills a need for us. Not only that, but he's in the perfect age range (25 yrs.). He'll be a top-4 calibre shutdown Dman for another 6-7 seasons.

Also would be great to have another russian around to help podz around for a few years. Not sure if they know each other but that dont matter just saying it would help.

If we're trying to do all of: add more snarl to our defence, add players who perfectly align with the age of our core group, and become more competitive, then Gavrikov is a perfect fit for us. And as you mentioned, being a Russian for Podkolzin to have around is just an added bonus. And of course, this is a guy that Shaw is familiar with - and is probably one of the big reasons why Gavrikov has evolved into the type of player he has. I see a genuine fit here.

Also Columbus GM is finnish so he would probably know jouveli real well.

Quick, text JB!!

But seriously, this kind of move seems quite feasible, and I'm sure it's been discussed to some extent...

Can we try to snag Jenner at the same time? :P  Roussel + Juolevi + Palmu and our 5th for Jenner + Gari? ::D

Portzline says management sees Jenner as part of CBJ's fabric.  Davidson ever since returning has been talking of re-establishing their culture and playing the right way.  He seems to see Jenner as a large part of helping with that.

Davidson: "I love that you take a player like Boone Jenner, drafted by the Blue Jackets, he has Blue Jacket blood in his veins. Things like that. You like to see that. Cam Atkinson -- players who understand Columbus, understand that they want to be Blue Jackets, and those are the types of people we want."

Sure...that's great.

He's also UFA in a year, they can't protect both him and the younger, cheaper Stenlund they just re-upped in the ED, and appear headed for a 're-something'.

Cernak pleeeeasssssse!!!!!

realistally and truthfully, JB won’t be acquiring either of

them.   “Promote from within” speech incoming.

Realistically if JB doesn't get Cernak that's realistic.   Lol.   TB is the most cap struck team in the league, nobody is getting Cernak.
