Which forward(s) should we target as UFA?

I see there is a lot of discussion regarding our defence but I saw this article on nhl.com and figured this is something people haven't speculated on as much due to our cap concerns. After reading this through, seeing the opportunities, and knowing JB I would have to think there has to be a plan to upgrade the forwards as well as the defence. How that happens only Jim, Gear, and Wiesy know but I wonder what you all think about who we would would target.

Keep in mind I'm thinking we can come up with $3 - $5 million after sorting out the chafe. I'll let you know my thoughts after you read the article.

One thing I noticed is there are a lot of good face-off men and power play guys. I don't think we need power play guys, we're crowded there already so I wouldn't really want a guy that scores mostly on the PP. In addition there are also some real gud penalty killers. I firmly believe we need a top notch PK'er with Beagle, Sutter, Motte, all questionable. We also need a third line center and a LW. So I guess I'm making a list. Feel free to disagree.

Nick Bonino - 2 x $2.75 (33 looking for security / 3 yr deal, he'll probably sign elsewhere)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=105377

Blake Coleman - 4 x $3.2 (29, he should cash in, tough player, 207 he can score, top PK'er)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=123293

Philip Danault - 4 x $4.2 (28, Center low points last year, great face-offs, PK, two way play)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=122605

Nick Foligno - 2 x $3.25 (33, former Captain, hit leader, physical left wing, PK'er, low points)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=80212

Ryan Getsalaugh - 1 yr - $9.225 000 - (Leader, Center, Face-offs)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=62467

Taylor Hall - 3 x $5.5m (29, good physical left winger, great on the PP)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=106818

Mike Hoffman - 1 x $2.5 (31, down year, had a hard time getting a contract last year)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=102284

David Krejci - 2 x $4 (35, Center, great on the face-off, great secondary 2-way player)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=78644

Gabriel Landeskog 6x6 (28, Captain, consistent 20 goal scorer, 2 way player)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=118530

Alex Ovechkin - 3 x 9.5 (The man, the legend, apparently he can score)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=118530

Kyle Palmieri 2 x $2.5 (30, off year but perennial 20 goal scorer, PP guy)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=120908

Corey Perry 1 x $775,000 (36, great season with the habs, kind of a goof)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=59656

Brandon Saad 2 x $4.5 (28, Goal scorer, 207, he's been bouncing around a bit)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=123396

Jayden Schwartz - 3 x $3.9 (28, Lw, 50 point guy, more of a playmaker, and feisty)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=118953

Paul Stastny 1 x $2.25 (35, Tough player but doesn't generate points like his pops)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=69840

Joe Thornton 1 x Rooster (420, I think he's done lol)

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=23710

I see Perry, Ovechkin, Landeskog, and Krecji, maybe Danault, re-signing with their teams. Hall is in left field, Thornton, Hoffman, and Palmieri are write-offs. That leaves

Coleman

Danualt

Foligno

Schwartz

Saad

Bonino

I think that's JB's order but I'd go hard for Schwartz, Coleman, or Saad. Might have to re-sign Sutter cheap or play Miller/Lind. I really think JB will go after Foligno, that's his type of player and fits what we're doing to a T.

I want to do trades more than signings.

1. Re-sign Pete and Hughes for a total of 13 million.

2. I want Boone Jenner or Barclay Goodrow.

3. Focus on ridding us of Loui or Roussel's cap (retention, buyout). Enough is enough.

4. Bring in some size on the back end.

I think contracts are going to surprise us this offseason. Won't be huge money like some people seem to think, more term.

5. Schwartz is a guy of interest, could be a bargain on term and money.

Focus on a big name defenceman next offseason, when our cap situation becomes stable.

First off 100% want Goodrow - he's what the young kids need - a guy who will stick up for them.

As for buyouts I think we have to suck it up and wait another year :(

Oh man, if we can get both Petey and Hughes for a combined 13M of cap i'd be overjoyed lol.  Sadly I think it's going to be more costly than that.

Sadly in flat cap world it seems just putting up with the final year of his contract is the most sensible thing to do from a cap management perspective.

What about Mattias Janmark to C the 3rd line?  Dougie Hamilton as Hughes' new D partner.  Assuming they would have to trade Schmidt+, and a couple of buyouts.

Top 9

Pettersson - Miller  - Boeser

Pearson - Horvat - Hoglander

Motte - Janmark - Podkolzin

Top 4

Hughes - Hamilton

Juolevi - Myers

Edler - Rathbone

Bowey or cheap depth by UFA or trade?

I think they should swing for the fences to get Hughes a top notch D partner for the next several years.

Help Tampa out with their cap issues and move Ferland for Killorn +. Only costs us 1m more and solves our mid 6 LW issue (as well as adding say a late 2nd+/- for helping them out).

There's a few guys I'd target for 3c as well. Jenner out of CBJ, Paul out of OTT etc. As well as a few decent UFA options.

From there I'd target a couple of Hamonic, Larsson, Savard, Hakanpaa, Ceci as UFA and/or guys like Mayfield, Jensen, Foote etc.

His buyout isn’t worth it for next years cap. You’d have to move large assets to get rid of him. I want LE gone more then anyone but no more pain. I don’t want to see that cap hit next year of the player/pick we trade thrive on another team.

Let him rot for one more year

Sadly, “rotting” for that much cashola at his age and intrinsic value is probably quite enjoyable for him, regardless of how much it hamstrings the team overall.

He had a pedigree and was offered this contract based on it.  What a disappointment.

i have been planning on starting a thread apologizing for my role in this misguided belief. This does not solve any of tampa's cap issues as there is no loophole tampa's playing roster last year was 81.5m

Mikael Granlund for 3rd line C?

Re sign Graovac & Bailey for depth.

Gregg Mcegg would be a good depth signing for the farm/call up.

I'd like to see the Canucks sign a REALLY good pkr for the LW 4th line spot.

JM EP BB

TP BH NH

TM MG VP

?? JB ZM

AR if he's not traded

Yeah, Schwartz, Coleman, and Saad would be at the top of my list for top six forwards (within reason) we should go after. I just read an article saying Benning wants a “center with some heft” so if that’s Getzlaf I’d be down for that.

Friedman is reporting the Canucks want a third line center with size so that rules out the likes of Granlund and Janmark.

I could see us making a Jenner trade or taking a flyer on the likes of Patrick.

Getzlaf would be an interesting cheap veteran option. Can that guy still skate?

Saves them $1m over Killorn and allows them to sign a guy the day after the season starts, utilizing the LTIR space.

Yes, it does.

Might even allow them to retain a guy like Savard.
