Those last two years were okay, and he still got paid. Now with the team heading towards a window of contention, role players need to be paid like role players. We don't have the young guys in the system to take these guys places yet, or they just aren't ready for 20+ minutes a night. Just look how bad we struggled last year after losing a minute eating reliable defenseman like Tanev. Signing a UFA from another team, to fill the holes left by Edler/Hamonic, is almost always going to result in an overpayment (and subsequent complaining from the fanbase) so why not try and re-sign a couple guys that have already played here, and want to play here? 1 1 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Listen, I like Edler and think he is a Canuck legend, but his past due date was a long time ago, he's much slower than he used to be and not as aggressive either. He will be a good mentor for Juolevi and Rathbone and I have no problem with him rotating in and out of the lineup next year. This is where I'm sitting too. I like Edler, seems like the coaches and his teammates do too, and he's still a useful role player. If he's willing to come back to kill penalties and take some tougher match ups away from Rathbone and Hughes, I'd be happy to keep him around. If he can be a good 16-18 minute defenseman (and get paid like a 16-18 minute defenseman), I'd welcome him back on 1 year deals until he decides to retire. They are also fielding multiple calls on Holtby and that there is genuine interest in him. Will try and supply a link.
