We'd also need the appropriate partner, which we don't have, and aren't likely to have, on our 3rd pair.

We also don't really need more depth D. Same issue I have with the "bring back Stecher" folk.

why not OEL?

To be fair, he was always supposed to be a complimentary D, with intangibles. Not the guy driving a pairing.

As we saw in Florida or now in Calgary (and yes, briefly here with Edler), when put in a position to succeed, with an appropriate partner, he can clearly contribute to a team (while bringing those intangibles).

Benning seems to have a had a major blind spot with actually fitting cohesive pieces together. We still see the remnants of that on our D core with Myers being a bit of a square peg given the rest of the makeup of our top 4.

He's a BIG RHD that can skate, put up complementary offense, play decent D, clear a crease etc, etc. Which in its own is a "good player", but if he doesn't fit with your other two top 4 D...

that is the most succinct analysis of ol Jim's performance

Similar problem with Myers and OEL. OEL is then covering for Gudbranson and then not getting used to his full capability. He's too busy covering and playing D to let his natural offensive ability shine.

Jason Dickinson -- probably a deal orchestrated by Gaglardi to stick it to Aquilini for stealing the Canucks from him.  Gaglardi is an evil genius if he instructed Jim Nill to dump Dickinson on Benning.

FTR, I'm just talking out of my ass.

it did work with Campbell and Guddy way back in FLA tho. Dunno, just a thought, not really looking for it to happen.

Again, it's not that it won't make Gudbranson look good. It will. But is it putting OEL in the best position to succeed? Are you getting the most out of OEL in that situation? He's the one getting paid $7m, we're better off getting the best out of him that we can, and putting him (and Hughes) in to a position to succeed.

IMO, that's partners like Marino, Lyubushkin, Manson... Maybe Miller out of BUF (though he's more of a ?) etc.

for sure. Just thinking more if we can only afford a budget option.

A guy like Lyubushkin shouldn't be prohibitively expensive. And/or hopefully our new and improved scouting and analytics departments can unearth an under the radar "next Manson" "next Marino" or "next Lyubushkin" or two as well.

How much would we save if Dickinson starts in Abby.

Not sure on the exact number, but I think about $1.2M is the maximum that can be buried in the minors, so that much would be saved and the rest would be dead cap. We'd also have to replace him with someone else too, so there's that to factor in too.

Dickinson has his worst season in 4 years, so there's a good chance his game will improve next season.  Hopefully

we are beyond the "3rd line C experience" and he can settle in as a LW.  In that case he is of value to the team, or

a trade.

I do have the feeling that burying him in Abbotsford would be a poor idea unless he's somehow even worse than last year.

Hopefully Kuznemko is up for that

Paul or Helm instead of Dickinson would help our sandpaper. As well as forecheck and puck possession. If there is no interest he can earn his spot on the 4th line by starting in Abby.

Just another (in a series of) bad move by Benning which makes it even harder for JR/Allvin to clean up the total mess.

Yes a failed experiment for sure, didn't come as advertised.  No face offs, no puck battle, non hitter, scoring non existent.  Saving money with him in Abby for Paul or Helm would help our bottom 6.
