Rafferty is a UFA, unlikely to re-sign in Vancouver, but would sign in Seattle. He's a guy that Seattle can re-sign for cheap and make either the 7th D man or the first callup (I doubt if Rafferty is waived in September he'd get claimed). Rafferty is one season removed from being the top rookie defenseman in the AHL and the highest point getting rookie defenseman in the AHL. He did bounce around between the taxi squad, NHL club, and AHL club last season and only got into one game between the three of them so there is that. If the Kraken go defense forward, which was Ron Francis's M.O. in Carolina, Rafferty makes sense for them to take a flier on over Lind or Gadjovich who they'd likely lose on waivers if they don't make the big club out of training camp (and is a risk the Canucks will have to take next season too anyways).

 But why wouldn't they just wait another week until Rafferty becomes a UFA and just sign him then when he ceases to be Canucks property? That way they can take another player off Vancouver like Lind or MacEwen.   They'll be sending about a dozen players to their shared farm team this winter and will need 20 to 25 next year in Palm Springs so they need extra bodies too.

 

Interestingly there were 3 UFAs selected by Vegas, as result of negotiated deals, that signed with other teams.   Vegas picked up a couple of other players and draft picks as inducement. (Carolina, Islanders and Winnipeg thought highly enough of their rosters to keep them largely intact ... not a problem for us)

 

I don't think Vegas selected any other UFAs and signed them .. why would they if they were coming onto the market a few days later?

For all of Jake’s warts these past 18 months or so, he was well on his way to having his first ever 20 goal season pre-Covid.   The “Covid lifestyle” and “Covid fatigue” affects everyone differently and this can certainly be a major reason why Virtanen was a no show from the Bubble onwards.

 

A 20 goal clip at a 2.5 million dollar cap hit is good production.  If Jake delivers for Seattle, he’ll likely try and be there long term and be a long term asset to the franchise (even if he signs a short term deal first).  If he busts, then Seattle walks away from him at the end of the season.

 

Guys like MacEwen and Lind are a dime a dozen.  Virtanen on the other hand, could be an excellent reclamation project to take a gamble on.

100% won't be anyone making over a million on the cap. Nothing on our roster is tantalizing enough for them to spend cap space on.
They're not going to do us any favours by taking a contract. Francis acknowledged that cap space is one of the strongest weapons they have.

The Golden Knights struck a deal when they joined the league that they would not have to give up a player in this first expansion draft since they joined. In return, their owner does not get a cut of Seattle’s $650 million expansion fee. The remaining 30 teams will each get paid $21.67 million.

I can't fathom a brand new team will want to begin their franchise by taking someone who is in the middle of an allegation case. Regardless of the outcome, why take that potential for drama as a brand new franchise?

You do understand that it takes 2 teams to make a deal and that any deal has to make sense! Maybe some teams don't want to make a deal. Maybe said deal doesn't make sense! Just because you want something (a trade etc) to happen, doesn't mean it just happens with a snap of the fingers. But, blame Benning! It's what you haters do!! The ignorance on here by some sometimes is unreal.
