Why is Vegas exempt from the expansion draft?

Kaplan: The Golden Knights do not have to give up a player in the expansion draft, a deal owner Bill Foley struck with the NHL in their original franchise agreement in 2016. The only downside for Vegas? Foley doesn't get a cut of Seattle's $650 million expansion fee, which equates to a $21.67 million check for the other 30 teams.

This was a typical practice for the NHL in the frenzied 1990s, when the league added nine teams over course of the decade. For example, when the Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets held a joint expansion draft in 2000, they didn't select players from the Atlanta Thrashers (who joined in 1999) or Nashville Predators (1998), as they were the two new kids on the block still finding their way.

I'd had a hard time finding an "expiry" date to this deal that was struck.

Yep, a big no thanks/pass.  We don't need drama or sideshows....just want 100% focus on hockey.

I'm all for giving kids a 2nd chance most of the time, thats pretty creepy behaviour even for 17. Hard pass.

Tough call where they go with this.

Holtby for a veteran goalie of course.

Lind, Gadj, Brisbois for farm depth.

Highmore, McEwen and even  Jake for cheap roster players.

My gut makes me think with some of the high priced names floating about they may want some cap friendly help on the roster. I think they take Jake.

I would be surprised if they took Price. The cap is going to remain at 81.5 million for at least another 4 seasons. Would you really want to commit 12% of your cap to an aging goalie who has been having increasing problems with injuries?

Exposing Price is a pretty safe bet for Montreal.

I would I think.

Jersey sales alone you would make killer money.

Not exactly the most interesting list if I'm Seattle. I'd probably take Hamonic if I'm them. Maybe they like Holtby, but I don't see why with all the goalie options available to them. He sucks.

Trade him at the deadline. Easy 2nd with retaining

I remember hearing or reading something about Gadjovich when he was having his bad first year in the AHL.

Whoever it was, was saying Jonah always had a bad first year in any league he moved into. If that's true and he's selected maybe we can get him back on waivers in his second full NHL year.

Virtanen might be a bit of a wildcard here in terms of getting selected.  Produced 18 goals not too long ago and has a 2.5 million dollar cap hit.  If he doesn’t pan out he’s only with them for one year anyways.  Jake in a new environment in a post Covid world could be a huge steal.

They're not taking Virtanen.

I think they can make side deals also.

Jim should suggest that if they take Holtby and all his salary we will throw in Jake and all his salary.

I still think it's our 9th and a prospect for them to take Loui.  JB needs the cap space for a D that can play now, not one that can play in 3 years

Why?

What is the agenda.  A player taken at 9th will be ten times more valuable then any ufa you will land for 6 mil.

Why would you give that up for one year of cap space?

That would be tge dumbest move Jim ever made.

Kind of. They can pick a UFA and let him walk, or, pick an RFA and not give a qualifying offer.

If they pick an RFA then compensation rules kick in as if he were offer-sheeted, whether signed or not -  so that's a good outcome for us

*compensation based on the value of the expiring contract, I believe
