[Rumour] Montreal Plans to Offersheet Pettersson

This is just another example of somebody making something up that kind of makes sense.  "Experts" take the same path we do to say, if Price is taken, what would Bergevin do with the cap space?  Then draw some conclusions and state it like it's inside info.  It could happen but this dufus is full of it.

Shrug… if it is $10 million and Petterson decides to sign it, then we can just choose to not match and just take the picks and use the cap on another player.

With 2nd contracts being at full market rate, there is literally no benefit to overpaying for an RFA just because he is yours.

We could get Landeskog with the money and Bump Horvat to the top line.

Landeskog-Horvat-Boeser

Pearson-Miller-Hoglander

Motte-Dickinson-Podkolzin

or even deal with Tampa and help their cap situation by taking Palat or Killorn and get another first round pick out of it.  That would leave us cap space for a top 4D

… then enjoy years of cheap ELC contracts with the extra picks as compensation.  Montreal without Price and Weber could be terrible and return us lottery picks.

If Montreal lose both Price and Weber, maybe getting the picks wouldn't be so bad? They've had two good playoff runs in a row, but they're a pretty mediocre regular season team as is. With the divisions going back to normal, the Habs hurting defensively and in net, and already not being the best regular season team anyways, it might not be the end of the world. Those picks could be pretty good.

I want the old compensation rules............

The St. Louis Blues were big game hunters in the early ‘90s when it came to free agents.  The season before, they’d signed Capitals restricted free agent defenseman Scott Stevens to an offer sheet for four years at a total of $5.1 million; as compensation, the Capitals were awarded five first-round draft picks.

Isn’t this a big no no with gm’s?

Not with Bergevin. He offer sheeted Aho a couple years ago.

That said, it's a super dangerous game for Montreal to be playing now with Suzuki coming up next year. And let's not pretend that retaliatory offer sheeted aren't a thing.

This is why Benning needs to get Petey signed asap

Doesn’t mean anything.  If Petey goes there he goes there.  We take the picks + take a heavier stance in the UFA market or trade market.

Miller-Horvat-Boeser

Hoglander-Danault-Podkolzin

Pearson-Dickinson-Virtanen

Motte-Beagle-Highmore

Hughes-Larsson

Rathbone-Schmidt

Juolevi-Myers

Demko

Holtby

Any team without Petey in it is worse off.

Why would Pettersson accept that Montréal offer sheet if the rumour is true? Are they that close? Canadiens could very well lose Price, and Weber next season. Losing a top goaltender and one of your top defensemen? Most teams don’t make the postseason with that.

I know right. If this is what Bergevin does to the Canucks, I can see them offer sheeting Suzuki next season when they’ve got plenty of cap.
