I wouldn't offer either over 6m on short term deals, I would prefer us go long term with both now to set our future cap up but its sounded like the are closer to doing short term deals, agents will want that so they can ask for the moon when the flat cap is over and big paydays can be asked for 1 1

His defensive game was horrible last year so in my mind, no way is he worth 8 till he improves that. Sure but Hughes also has leverage as the Canucks best young player on the d core and already the second best d men on the team arguably only behind the veteran OEL. 2 of his brothers are in New Jersey he may be looking to leave after his deal if the Canucks low ball him and offer the bridge contract at first. Hughes and Pettersson are both represented by the top agency in the game so I would expect a large AAV and term possibly as well. Unless they can agree to bridge deals with both if they are not fully comfortable committing long term yet to the franchise.

Schmidt at 6 is better than Jones. Edited July 25, 2021 by Alflives

We would be able to afford a real good supporting cast around them as they develop further. All parties need to only look at Toronto to see what happens when you pay too many, too much, too soon.

Those numbers are pretty close on three year bridge contracts. $8mil+ deals are reserved for buying up several years of a guys UFA eligibility. I’d be OK with Petey getting longer term at higher rates but Quinn needs to show me more for a long term high value contract.

Being the "best" dman on a crap team last year isn't much to hang your hat on. Part of the "crap" on this team was Hughes plus minus. No way this doesn't get factored into a deal. I stand by there is no way Hughes is worth 8 per.

JP has represented the twins since their junior days. Will be interesting to see how this effects the negotiations. I suspect a lot of very respectful, fact filled conversations. Worse case we keep a legit backup and top four D. No need to do anything really. I agree that Holtby may be worth more at the deadline but if we are in playoff contention I'd rather keep him. He has to make that decision before free agency opens up though, or there might not be much left on the market and he might have to acquire their replacement by trade. 1

48MPHSlapShot
I imagine this deal might not happen until much deeper into the offseason, when most of the good free agent D are scooped up and the teams that failed to improve their bluelines start to panic.
