Sign me up and I don’t even know enough about Garland yet. Yeah, I think this is a good deal for us. And good on JB for waiting a year to get a better deal. OEL's contract is a risk factor but the potential reward is high -- OEL on a young Canucks team playing Green's style, could regain his form as a #1D. OEL should improve our transition game immensely, we will have another player besides QH to help our offence from the backend. Down a goal, we can send out QH, OEL, or both. We also get a QB for our 2nd PP. All of a sudden we got lots of guys that can move the puck: QH, Rathbone, OJ OEL, Schmidt, Myers I think they will give a try with OEL on the right side. If he sticks there, this deal is even better. The last year or two of OEL contract may suck -- essentially, we are delaying the pain that was sure to come next season due to bad contracts to the future. Not a bad tradeoff since our young guys are ready to compete and a lot can happen in 5 years, including the cap going up. If cap goes up to 90+ mil in 2025, OEL's 7+ mil contract is palatable even if he is a bottom pairing dman at that point in time. We could also dump his cap -- there may be favorable deals available later as opposed to now where almost all teams are cap crunched due to COVID. 1

Next year their cap space troubles were all gone and they would still have their 9th and the second that they just added plus as Jim he always does, he threw in a 7th. LOL I think the bigger picture is you need to show improvement to your team and fan base. Miller and Horvat + aren’t waiting 3 years for 9OA to maybe be ready. OEL makes the top 4 more top heavy giving younger guys flexibility on the third pair. This move is for now and into the future. 1 1

Popular Post tas
the 2nd (and 7th) make no difference to me. there are lots of opportunities to recoup 2nd rounders. still a hell of a trade. conor garland will be an excellent top 9 addition and I personally believe oel will be revitalized playing somewhere that isn't poison. 9 8 3
Popular Post Whorvat
I think my favorite part about this trade isn't that we're a better team now than we were before it, it's that we get to see all of the complaints about this. Very similar reaction to when we picked up Miller Absolutely love the trade 1 4 1

ShawnAntoski
It cost the Canucks a 1st, 2nd and a lot of cap space to fix his past mistakes (looking forward, I wonder how much it will cost to fix the OEL contract - if it becomes stale). Still waiting on any potential Schmidt trade. Also, Dickson & Garland are RFA’s. The numbers don’t work long term - LE 2.0 ? My summary - the Yotes gained picks and a lot of cap space moving forward. Still having a wait & see approach cause lots of moves are potentially still being worked on. Edited July 23, 2021 by ShawnAntoski 1 2
Tower102
Too much hate on OEL in here. Will be better with better players around him. Yes the contract is a bit long and a bit high but the retention is huge. This makes us WAY better for the next 2-3 years. After that, maybe not depending who is available at 9. Garland is going to be a slightly worse Miller. We have a good looking versatile top 9 now where players can shift up and down and have a couple decent two way lines and a strong 4th line with Motte there. Miller Petey Boeser Hoglander Horvat Garland Pearson Dickinson Pod Motte Hawrylyk MacEwen Curious what we do on our back end, I hope we keep Schmidt as I don't want to sell low and think this would be a pretty good 7. OEL - Schmidt Hughes - Hamonic Rathbone - Myers Juolevi

How's that cap wise?

Down by the River
4 minutes ago, Spoosh said: The problem in my view is people overthinking it way too much. For whatever reason fans think it is their problem to manage the cap and analyze deals and future what ifs. I’m looking forward to seeing the on-ive product. Everything else will be fixed by people well aware of the financial landscape in the NHL and trust me they have thought this through. We gave up nothing of real value compared to what we got in return. We moved out 3 players proven to be past their prime and not being able to help the team and one good chance (still just a chance). We got a great top-9 energy guy and a proven d-man with more upside than anyone we moved out. Someone has to... It is hard to be excited about the product on the ice when it is so far away from being able to contend for the cup. That's why managing the cap is important, because it gets you closer to a point where you can be excited about the on-ice product. I'm not going to be excited about a Flames/Oilers/Leafs-type situation where they perennially underachieve in the postseason. The Canucks had just one year to go before their major cap issues were over. Benning clearly couldn't wait that long and the Aquas wanted that ticket revenue back, and so here we are. I think Garland is a great add. I think OEL will be better than his past performance, but still nowhere worth his current salary, even with 1.2 mil off the books. This would have been a great deal 3 years ago. Making the deal now just feels like a lack of patience. 1 1

His cheap ass didn’t fire Jim and not it resulted to this You can't be so naive as to think that Frankie, possibly the most hands on owner in the NHL, didn't approve a deal of this magnitude before it happened. Jim agrees on a deal that he thinks can improve our team, presents it to the owner, the owner approves.

Popular Post oldnews
holy crap. Love the fact the both LE and Roussel cap hits are moved. Will miss my Jay Beagle - obviously love the way he plays the game - and extremely likeable. Hard to argue with the two players we got. Was it worth the 9th overall pick? Will have to think about it more - but at first, gut take I'd have to say it's hard to argue with. 3 8
