They play the same side.

When you’re as good as OEL, and you’re skating all over with Hughes, Pettersson, Boeser and Horvat, who cares what side you play on.

I haven’t said that I’m against this trade precisely because it hinges on which OEL shows up.

But that cap would’ve been gained next year regardless. Is what we paid the Yotes to take 3 1-year contracts off our hands worth it when we could’ve just bided our time? We’re certainly not contending this coming season.

Objectively, I agree with you. The reality of the players - I think we would have lost some core pieces in UFA if we didn't improve the team for this year and next year

He received Norris votes 3 years ago but thanks for the stupid graphic.

So did Rielly and he belongs in the AHL.  I place zero value in advanced stats, but Shaw will have his work cut out for him to get OEL to play effectively in his own zone.

Yeah, we all agree he's not had some good years recently but has a great chance at resurgance.

Keep up.

Could also be the Loui Ericksson contract repeating itself.

Pray that this was just a player feeling a little uninspired, depressed or stale living’ in the “United Gong-show States of America” especially in Arizona one of the politically divided & looney-toon southern States, during these very Trumpian & Covid-times.

If welcomed back into the Great White North, where there are social programs & people who generally co-exist peacefully while living in reality,… this team & city may well be a godsend to this guy.

I hope that’s the case, in fact I pray that’s the case…’cuz yet another albatross contract could lead to  another core-flush - if value isn’t being added, perceived, seen or believed - immediately.

Fingers crossed.

And given the animosity between him and his old coach I can see how his numbers would decline. Thing is, he WANTS to be in Vancouver. And we WANT him to be here. So the situation is not going to be the same for him. And we have scoring talent and an offensive minded coach. That'll help boost his numbers. And again, that whole thing where he wasn't happy where he was won't be a thing here on account of we want him and he wants to be here. But they can't quantify that in their stupid graphs and calculators so that must mean he sucks, trade sucks, life sucks.

The success or failure of this deal really does hinge on whether OEL is an overrated, over the hill player on the decline or a star defenseman that had become disenfranchised with the terrible situation he was in in Arizona and still has a lot to give on a better team. Until we know for sure which is true, whether we won or lost this trade is still up in the air.

I still think we need to improve the blueline though. We need a RHD that can defend at a high level, can ideally play with an edge, and can be acquired for relatively cheap. That's a tough ask.

Maybe a hockey trade for Schmidt? 1 for 1?

Our top 6 looks stupid good now though.

I love how some fans put so much value in a first round pick.

Like that’s going to be the difference of us being a contender in 5 years.

Here’s the thing, if we’re not a contender before 5 years we’re probably already in another rebuild anyways.

The time to go for it is now. We have the core in place.

Well considering our core was built with 1st rounders, I say yeah they are value !

Are these guys taking us to the top next year?

With OEL only allowing to be traded to Boston or Vancouver, we were dealing from strength

I would just like to know where all our talented young cheaper inserts will come from?

Do you think we are a top team now?

We are a presidents Cup team pushing it further now?

Sorry until that time, top 9 1st round picks are relevant and always hold value as my assets

Remember before we got the 9th pick , JB saying there are 9 really good guys in this draft ?

Chances are some fell  to him again and he had more than the 1 option to choose that he was talking about

It seems he doesn't want to draft anymore now of his turnover in scouting in the last drafts

The bigger they are, the harder they fall...

Yikes! That looked almost like Marchand when he threw-over Salo.

I hope this guy’s durable.

I think that’s why Shaw didn’t just replace Baumgartner - his job is basically quality control for both the d and forwards - and yeah OEL needs to be a lot better.

I cut him some slack because playing in Arizona has to be brutal - correct me if I’m wrong but I think I remember him signing that deal after they went to the playoffs and then the team did a 180 and went back to rebuild mode.

I just like to look at the psychology of a player - he was miserable 2 years ago spending his prime on a cellar dweller and asked for a trade - didn't get one - and played last year a little injured and still miserable.

Canucks obvious “wins” in the trade are the cap dumps and Garland… OEL is a big bet. I just think he deserves a fresh set of eyes this year.

What just happened?

1.  Benning painted himself into a corner by adding players who were good in the past so they cost a lot of money, and they are not good any more.  Canuck fans have resigned themselves to the reality that these contracts would expire in 2022 and that the team would be severely limited as to what they could do until then.  Benning brought out his broom and swept 3 of the worst away.  Eriksson 6.0 cap hit, Roussel 3.0 and Beagle 3.0.

2.  Benning has been trying to add top 9 forwards and reasonable prices who play with jam, can skate and put up points also who fit in within the age range of the core (Horvat 26 and Hughes 21).  Now, Garland is 25 and just coming into his own.  He will likely slot into the 2nd line, sign for around $4.0, and put up 40 points.

3.  Benning has been trying to add a top pair quality 2-way D who can move the puck, play the PP and PK, match up against top players and give us some offense.

The cost.

9 OA, 2nd next year, 7th in 2 years.

The benefits, all of the above.

Now, the core of the Canucks has been drafted but they need to be properly supported.  Draft picks should be considered as assets to be either used and the players developed over the next 3-5 years or parleyed into players who can support the present core today.

In one fell swoop, Trader Jim awoke from a slumber and made the Canucks a helluva lot better.  Is there more work to do?  Of course, but I'm feeling a helluva lot more at ease with the line up that he might trot out on opening night.

That was the cost for OEL AND Garland.  Big difference...

If you would’ve told me that Arizona would also take $12.000MIL back in dead Cap space and retain $1.650MIL of OEL money, I would’ve sprayed my beer in a non-Covid-friendly way in unison with everyone else.

I thought the retention was under 1m my the Coyotes?
