Benning's own words not mine ... He said 2 years. If he thinks the team isn't ready to compete now, as he said, why make this move?

True... at the time, he probably thought he had to ride it out with the Eriksson dead cap...

He also said this deal had been worked on for some weeks, so maybe smoke screen?

No doubt he wants this core to see he means business, which I think will be important, when they start to talk contracts with Petey, QH and later Bo and Miller...

OEL is the type of defenseman that can play into his 40's. His edgework and skating is top tier. If Edler was a better skater he would have been a 8 million dollar defender who would be making 5 ish now. But he can't keep up. Tochet has a list a mile long if players who regressed playing for him. Last point. Look at Arizona's trade today! This is how they've run their team for the last decade. Paint would dry slower in that locker room.

WELCOME to VANCOUVER OEL!!!!!!

Ideally, OEL was unhappy/not playing to his potential in ARZ.  He is an elite player so if he plays closer to his ceiling-imagine the type of player the Canucks could be getting?  He's also under rated a pita to play against.  If this works out it he could be a hammer on the back end.

Are people talking about how OEL basically had ARZ over the coals with where he could get traded to?  VAN might not have otherwise gotten the deal they did.

And now you've got a legit scorer and pita in Garlund.  He's another Hoagie no?  And Dickinson.  And OEL.  + whatever else they do (like khaira)?  I look forward to watching this group.

those 78 points make him 23rd overall in scoring for RW’s in the last two seasons playing on a bad team. That’s a helluva nice piece for our second line.

again, the poster claimed that Garland is one of the best RW in the NHL. My response was that he scored 39 points in  68 games in 2019/2020 and 39 points in 49 games in 2020/2021 - using this numbers to demonstrate that Garland clearly isn't one of the best RW in the NHL.

Question for you: Do you consider Garland - who ranks 23rd overall in scoring for RW's - as one of the best RW's in the NHL? Just curious. Anxiously awaiting your response. Can't wait.

Thanks for your response.

Last year was not a true reflection of the team. Bubble Canucks are.

We lost Edler and got OEL. 6 mil for a D that can play is not that terrible.

pretty sure bubble canucks are not a true reflection of this team lol.. many of the "fans" here are referring to that's year 2 of a rebuild.. and we are not suppose to compete for another 2 years or so while we continue to rebuild lol

i never bought in to the we only started rebuilding after the sedin retired crap so i'm not against the trade.. i'm only against the crap benning been feeding us.. retool? rebuild? all in? rebuild again? or we going all in again.. what exactly is this teams stance? as it flip flops every year.. first couple years it's retool.. then sedin retired it's rebuild, but we traded away a 1st for miller who probably ends up close to 30+ when we were suppose to compete? and then followed that up with trading for toffoli at the deadline?? looks nothing like a rebuild.. then we have the covid year where we looked like crap.. and then comes out and say we probably not ready to compete for 2 more years? and then all of a sudden went all in on OEL? OEL is a trade u make to push and compete for the playoff now.. not a few years down the road.. so what exactly is the teams plan/direction?

Why must a player at the big table share w/you their hand of cards?

Embrace the mystery! :^)

What just happened?

1.  Benning painted himself into a corner by adding players who were good in the past so they cost a lot of money, and they are not good any more.  Canuck fans have resigned themselves to the reality that these contracts would expire in 2022 and that the team would be severely limited as to what they could do until then.  Benning brought out his broom and swept 3 of the worst away.  Eriksson 6.0 cap hit, Roussel 3.0 and Beagle 3.0.

2.  Benning has been trying to add top 9 forwards and reasonable prices who play with jam, can skate and put up points also who fit in within the age range of the core (Horvat 26 and Hughes 21).  Now, Garland is 25 and just coming into his own.  He will likely slot into the 2nd line, sign for around $4.0, and put up 40 points.

3.  Benning has been trying to add a top pair quality 2-way D who can move the puck, play the PP and PK, match up against top players and give us some offense.

The cost.

9 OA, 2nd next year, 7th in 2 years.

The benefits, all of the above.

Now, the core of the Canucks has been drafted but they need to be properly supported.  Draft picks should be considered as assets to be either used and the players developed over the next 3-5 years or parleyed into players who can support the present core today.

In one fell swoop, Trader Jim awoke from a slumber and made the Canucks a helluva lot better.  Is there more work to do?  Of course, but I'm feeling a helluva lot more at ease with the line up that he might trot out on opening night.

Agree with everything except garland had 39 points in what 49 games last year? Bet he gets way more the  40 points

Who are you signing with your cap space next year? Are you signing seth jones? People on this board like to pinpoint specific players that fit the mold for our team (aka all the available RHD in the NHL), BUT nhl players are humans and may have no desire at all to play for the canucks. Adam Larsson clearly didn't, Jones definitely doesn't want too, list goes on and on. You can't just start penciling in free agents because we have cap and we're a "nice city "

Do you really want Loui Eriksson 2.0 here with a bad 7 mill contract weighing down the team after another season or 2?  OEL has been declining every season?  You think he's magically going to find his legs again and play like he was 21 years old and starting to rip up the league?  He's a PP specialist, last time I checked we have Hughes for that.

Also who are we signing, oh I don't know maybe depth players to compliment our young kids that are going to get paid.  Instead our D is going to be weighed down in a season or 2 with OEL and Myers anchoring the 3rd pairing, getting caved in and getting destroyed because neither can keep up.

I would have rather brought Hamonic back on a 2-3 year deal as he has expressed interest in returning (not going to be as cheap as last year).  Theres no guarantee anyone is going to come here ever even though we love all playing GM but the long term weigh down is bad on this one.  What are we hoping for?  2 maybe 3 solid years of OEL and 4 years of trash?  Maybe I will be wrong but the hockey guys and analytics guys seem to not be very enthused with OEL for any amount of time as he's on a decline already.

Also he was top 15 RW league-wide in points per game last season on a terrible Coyotes team. Finishing ahead of the likes of Andrei Svechnikov, Sam Reinhart etc.

The constant negativity of posters here are too much. Who are you cheering for the Vancouver Canucks or the Abbotsford Canucks?

As mentioned before:

Our team has gotten better with a former Captain and top 2/top 4 defenceman who is only paid 1M more Cap space than Meyers/Schmidt/Edler’s old contract. All indications are he will step it up as a true #1 again as he WANTS to be HERE.

We get a solid top 6 forward.

We dump 3 very bad contracts.

All this and we didn’t give up any good players off our team.

I really don’t get some of the “fans” here.    Same folks who scoffed at giving up a 1st for Miller.

JB did the impossible yesterday and gave the team some genuine help in being playoff team. This team can do serious damage now.

head punch GIF

come on man, we all know JB is not the best GM in the league, not the worst? also true.

Canucks fans stop being so hyperbolic, it is a very very even deal and in long-term it might look worse,

short-term if OEL brings top 4 performance then yes, but he is not Hedman, people acting like he is Hedman,

my problem with JB is that he is not that creative and as a canucks fan I want to have the most creative GM, is that wrong? No.

I liked Benning and appreciated what a $&!#ty situation he had when he started, but he has been here for some time.

if team does not show massive improvement in the coming season, he should be fired.

he is not the most efficient GM, accept it.

also I like canucks to be draft and develop team.

again he trades too many picks, he is not savvy with the trades, he is not savvy in free agancy.

he has good record in drafting, yet he trades picks.

hope he picks a good one in 2nd round.

Also welcome OEL. \m/ \m/

cheering for the canucks as always.
