Benning might have misspoke, but he said (in a presser a couple days ago) he’d given Holtby’s agent permission to talk to other teams.

He also said if Dipietro proves himself, he can be the backup this year even if it's not what he prefers.

I imagine like in every season their will be self reflection by the players and the organization will be discussing the following:

  • the player's performance (the good, the bad, and the ugly)
  • the player's future
  • the player's desire to be here
  • the player's value on the market

Organizations do this every year so nothing would change... If the canucks fall flat then hard discussions on Miller, and Bo being 1 year left to UFA will be had. Boeser being an RFA will garner tough conversation as well.

Pettersson and Hughes however will not be traded (Well Hughes maybe if NJD does some stupid crazy trade to complete the Hughes trinity)

I agree - the “hard” decisions (somewhat ironically) come if this team finds success.  It’ll be hard to keep everyone if they keep improving. (Although selling a piece or two might be the built in way JB revitalizes the prospect pool.)

If we flop again it’s pretty clear JB is canned and the new GM can start moving guys out to recoup picks and prospects and re-something around Hughes and Petey. It’ll be sad to see some guys go but I don’t think anyone would question it too much and you can bet a guy like Miller won’t want to stick around if we suck again.

If we have another season like we just had (assuming it's a regular regular season - no bubble, no massive amount of injuries etc), not only will Benning be gone but this team should be blown up and we start over again.

This team has to make the playoffs this year.  If they don't, it can only mean that OEL and Garland were not the players we hoped they were and/or , and more importantly, the core group of this team isn't as talented as we thought they were.

Gonna be an interesting season.

Your talking Buffalo management and ownership style. I agree with you that another loosing year and changes in coaching and management are inevitable. Sorry i dont agree with blowing up the core. 2 more years of loosing and i may change my mind..........

IMHO our core is very good, not perfect but worthy of building around it for 5+ - years. Mixing in the ideal support/role players is now the main focus and challenge going forward.

Winning the cup should and will always be the goal but that said, fielding an exciting competitive playoff team for the foreseeable future would get my CANUCKS mojo going again.

Go Canucks go

Why not?  If Petey,  BO, Miller, Demko, Boeser et al aren't good enough to get us into the playoffs, why is it so important to hold onto them?

BTW: That being said, I expect the Canucks to make the playoffs this year.

Because it would take the better part of 10 years to replace them all.  Where exactly are you going to find a #1 centre, #2 centre, #1/#2 Dman, #1 goalie, #1 right winger plus all the supporting pieces?

The only way to do that is to start from scratch and collect high picks.  And then what happens if those players aren't good enough?  Edmonton has the best player in the world.  Are they going to trade him if they miss the playoffs?  Do you want Vancouver to be like Buffalo right now, who don't have a hope in hell of ever seeing any playoff action for at least 5-7 years?  Same with Arizona.

Vancouver is a hockey town.  if you've been around long enough you will know we've had long stretches of zero success.  You can't just simply trade the whole team that's taken 7 years to build and start from scratch.  Benning is tinkering with the team right now, adding pieces and getting rid of others.  There is only so much he can do with a flat cap.  Everyone has been bit**ing to get rid of all the bad contracts.  He did that with one trade.  Now people are bit**ing that he gave up the 1st round pick and that OEL is a has been and bottom pairing Dman.

You can't please everyone and quite frankly Benning and the Aquilini family don't care.  Benning could trade for McJesus tomorrow and people would still complain...

Gods, man, it sounds like you can't wait for these guys to be shipped out! Why be so depressingly negative about next season when the puck hasn't even dropped yet? Especially when, on paper at least, we are a better team than last year.

With OEL on our team, should we consider keeping Schmidt now?

There is so much talk around moving him but I think it depletes our d-core drastically if we do.

Keeping him would give us good depth on the blue-line but the rumours of him wanting to leave and the fact Benning seems to be intending on moving him soon shows otherwise.

Ha! I think we’ll do great next year.

Just calling it like I see it regarding the cap / prospect pool though.  We haven’t really experienced “too many good players” in a loooong time and hopefully that’s where we’re headed.  The bad news is, in a cap world, it’s hard to keep everyone. The good news is that should help add picks/prospects that we’re short on.

Rather not. For one he doesnt want to be here anymore and his cap hit can help us a lot more than having him on the team.
