Im a fan of the trade but this video certainly puts his struggles into perspective.  Hopefully he can get some of his confidence back next year because we will face McDavid a lot and if he is going to be our number 1 Dman he will need to contain him.

And here is OEL scoring, while McDavid is too slow to get to him.

Vids are fun aren't they?

u mad bro?  I didn't post one clip like you did,  I posted a compilation of multiple instances where he got completely decimated.... it clearly is a thing given the fact that OEL was making fun of himself about it..... anyway, wasn't trying to start anything... like I said, I liked the trade and am optimistic he can get back on track.  I saw this video last night and was just surprised that this thread seemed like we went 181 pages without anyone posting this (from what I can tell).... seemed worth noting all things considered.... apologies for ruffling your feathers!!!!!!!

You do understand that McDavid does this to literally every defenseman in the league, right? You don’t contain him, you just hope that nobody else on the oilers can score lol

If you hit him a lot, he dives more and scores less.  Playing him physically really messes with his head.  We got a lot bigger; McDiver is going to be crying to the refs all season.

Very good.

But just to delve into this a bit more:

You're right - every trade is a gamble.  And the longer the contract and salary cap hit involved, the greater the gamble it is.

It's OEL's six year contract with a $7 million cap hit that makes this trade a big gamble

That's not to say that the Canucks or other teams shouldn't make trades that are big gambles.  But we should recognize those trades for what they are.

If OEL continues his downward spiral for the next six years, Benning has handed this franchise an anchor.  It's hard enough to put together a Cup contender without having a $7 million salary cap handicap.

On the other hand, if OEL rebounds and plays like a good first line defenseman (not a Norris candidate but a good first line defenceman) and Garland turns out to be the.solid player many people predict, then Benning has pulled off one of the best trades in Canuck history.

It's a big gamble and one that is going to make this upcoming season very interesting to watch.

I am sad we may not be able to score empty netters without Erickson here

And wouldn't it be ironic if Eriksson was the player who got rejuvenated by a change in location and scored 30 goals.

Well, actually when the games get harder, playoffs, McDavid loses.  Pretty much a fact.

but the media says he's the best player ever. I'm so confused.

Keep lying to yourself.   This clown thinks he had McDavid figured out lollll

It's not exactly a secret McDiver can't handle the rough stuff.  Numerous clips of him throwing tantrums to the refs when they don't fall for his act.

He gets gifted way less power plays. Frankly I wasnt impressed by his numbers last year. He feasted on the powerplay in a weak division. Big &^@#ing deal...  Then swept in the playoffs when the whistles go away.

What downward spiral are you referring to?

OEL has had reliable and consistent offensive numbers for the last 10 seasons.

Perhaps you refer to ice time? His average ice time has been reduced in the last 4 years down to around 23 mins, instead of the 25 mins he was playing from 2012-2017, but that is just good player management rather than anything to do with performance.

If OEL continues on whatever this current spiral is, then he will be an absolute steal.

Season   Pts/60  Av TOI

2010-11    0.9      15.0

2011-12    1.1      22.1

2012-13    1.2      25.1

2013-14    1.3      25.9

2014-15    1.3      25.2

2015-16    1.8      24.7

2016-17    1.2      24.6

2017-18    1.3      23.7

2018-19    1.4      23.6

2019-20    1.2      23.0

2020-21    1.5      21.0

I stand corrected.  Thank you.

And a further question:

I notice OEL's +/- last season was -17 which ranked him 265/270 in defensemen.  Do you chalk this up to his being on a poor team?

Also, while your stats show his offensive play is holding steady, are there any comparable stats that show how his defensive skills are doing?

Apologies if this has already been discussed in this rather long thread.

Great post good to see the numbers! Looking at our roster I’d also wager we score more goals per 60 than these Coyotes teams.
