Oh dear sweet baby Jesus..useless Sedins didn't take away Jim's phone.

Please don't let this be as bad as I am imagining it to be.

They didn't take away his phone...they just sold him on OEL and convinced him to add the second round pick that ARZ wanted (according to Benning).

To think had they not made this trade and just held on, all these players would’ve been UFA, and would’ve walked.   Think of all that free cap

Exactly. And it's not just that - it's giving up prime assets to ACQUIRE a guy who was ALREADY massively underperforming his long-term contract. Imagine what we'd have to PAY in order to unload OEL right now; then think about what we GAVE UP in the trade. Arizona must have been laughing.

At least we got LE for free, and he was coming off a huge year. OEL was already bad when we got him, and we just hoped he'd magically have a career revival at age 29 that would last 6 years. And we gave up valuable future assets in the process. I'll never understand the logic of this trade.

And this isn't hindsight. It was so clear to so many people even at the time that this was a horrible deal.

How much do people expect top pairing Defenceman be paid ? He will be turning 35 at the end of his deal, not 45.

Garland is a huge player in this deal as well.

So all of our bad contracts & retention on OEL.

We get a top 6 FWD & top 4D.

I like it. It's basically all our problems solved in 1 deal.

This is becoming a steal at this point.  I had little faith in JB but this changes that.

OEL at 7 million is actually robbery.

This is unreal. I don’t see how anyone is unhappy with this deal.

We convinced a team to pay a player 1.2 million dollars per year not to play for them for 6 years and we unloaded LE in the same transaction.

Sign me up and I don’t even know enough about Garland yet.

Agreed.  Norris calibre OEL at 7 or Hyman at 5.  I think we’re in great shape.

OEL at 7 mil per is a great piece to add.  Plus we get a top six winger in Garland and we dump Loui, Beagle, and Rooster.  And that only costs 9OA!  That’s a fabulous trade for us.  Way to get er done Jimmy Boy!

Ability to think critically amongst this fanbase barely exists here anymore ::D

I really wonder what the value of each of these pieces were. Garland is a solid young player, probably worth a 2nd round pick just by himself. OEL at his cap hit is probably worth a 2nd as well.

Then getting rid of 10M in absolutely dead cap, that's the tricky bit. 10M can basically equate to a top line center super-star which is just about 3-4 x 1st round picks. Obviously things don't quite work that way. Instead, we pay 1 x 1st round pick, but maybe 1/3 of that value (if you assume one 1st round pick = three 2nds, based on probability of making the NHL) goes towards Garland/OEL. Then again, it's a high 1st...

I remember a lot of CDC were quite happy with this trade at the time. It kept us competitive when we were on the cusp, Edler had just left us, we needed a solid veteran defenceman in his prime, and no one was happy with the draft last year. If it was a top 10 pick in this coming draft it'd be outrageous.

I think this deal was pressured by FA as well to keep us in the playoff hunt. Obviously things didn't work out and we still suck now, but we would have been a lot worse without Garland and OEL - who would be playing on this defence on the left side?

I know people aren't too happy about OEL but a 6M 20-22 minute veteran defenceman is fairly hard to come by these days and he logs important minutes for us. Defencemen seem to be playing comfortably now into their mid-30s and because of his contract and lack of offence I think he'll be a hard piece to move, so even if we rebuild I think we're stuck with OEL. Let's hope he has a Karlsson-like rebirth...

I still think this trade is good. Call me stupid. I don't care. What is wrong with Garland? What is wrong with OEL playing 22 minutes a game with scrubs that should be depth or even AHLers? Sure 7mil is a steep price. But I am a big proponent of our scrub defenders not having to play a ton of defense. Y'all can love Hughes all you want I love him too, he's not good defensively. OEL takes those grueling shifts against the top opposing scorers. And he has to do it with trashcans and AHL jobbers. Give me a break before you come at me with the he sucks storyline.

The only thing I'll say is, the trade aged poorly cause management can't build a good team for the life of them. That's the only angle I'll concede. I honestly think if we nabbed Marino to play with OEL, he'd be looking really good right now. Marino is filling more or less the same niche as OEL. They 100% would have been a really great two way pair. But instead we're out here actively hoping to see more Burroughs. That's how bad our blueline has been. We actually want Burroughs over some of the other pylons.

.

Is the team closer to being a playoff team. So far it doesn't look it.
