oldnews
Quote Arizona will pay about 1.2 million per year for the remaining 6 years left Arizona effectively retained 7.2 million of cap in this deal - in addition to taking 12 million this season. Eriksson and Roussel's contracts - which save Arizona a crap load of actual cash vs cap space obviously had a positive (in specific context) in this deal. 2

aGENT
I would have maybe liked a hair more retention, but that's not a bad piece of work. Probably a nail in the Edler coming back coffin though... We'll see.. 1

Locke Lamora
I can’t read the thread faster than the pages are appearing. Got up to page 17 and now I just have to weigh in on this. First, who knew that ol Jimbo had a brass pair on him like THIS. I like the deal overall. Sure, one of my favourite things in hockey is following our prospects and having a good stable of young, developing talent is awesome….so seeing the 9th pick go sucks. Garland could be the key here. JT Miller part 2. Just as some are scratching thier heads about Garland, many did the same about JT. I think the Canucks pro-scouting is underrated. But the REAL key as to how this deal will go down to me is whether OEL is rejuvenated by getting the hell out of the Arizona trainwreck. If we get 3 good years out of him that would be excellent. I am concerned that his game continues on its slide from peak-OEL. But I’m leaning towards a bit of a rebirth for him on the Canucks, which is known as a haven for Swedish NHL’ers. So for me, it’s a solid “Good job Jimbo”. Would revise to “Great job Jimbo!!!” if OEL regains some of his prior for the next few years. 30 years old ain’t too late for this to happen. KoreanHockeyFan
I'm half joking when I say this, but I blame CDC and our toxic media for forcing Benning's hand on this trade by constantly stirring up drama of how the Canucks need to win now, while also hypocritically complaining about how the Canucks have no future. Don't get it twisted, I'm know the Aqulinis have probably been pressuring Benning to do something for years, but all whiny noise from fans and the media definitely didn't help. On another note, we still need a right-handed defenceman. Edited July 23, 2021 by KoreanHockeyFan 1

Quinn Hughes quarterbacks our first unit PP, so OEL would be pushed to the second unit. And we all know that our first unit stays out for 75% of the power play, so OEL would barely get minutes. Hopefully his 5 on 5 offensive play is decent. Seems OEL and Hughes can play either side, so time will tell who gets what ice time and where. There is only ONE year left on each of those awful deals, where he acquired players over or approaching thirty on multi year vastly over-priced deals for players that either have, or are teetering on, these players’ years of rapid decline. Each of those players’ production declined sharply from the time they were acquired. Oh, and add Sutter to that same list. Ekman-Larson has been in decline from the time he got his EIGHT year contract, two years ago. As a re-inforcer, he just added Schmidt to that list of rapidly fading, superannuated, overpaid failures. Can’t blame the player... they just took the money. An NHL career, for the vast majority of players, is short, and theses players are no exception. Signing the vast majority of players approaching thirty, to high price, long term contracts, is absurdly stupid. Benning appears to be doubling down on daft. This ridiculous trade would commit us to SIX more high priced years with Ekaman-Larsen, in order to get rid of one year each of Eriksson, Roussel, and Beagle. Arizona should be sending us the draft picks for getting rid of six years of Ekman-Larsen. We are rid of Eriksson et-al in a year. Benning is trading the crippling effect of his prior bad trades for six years of Ekman-Larsen, and giving up a high first and a second for the privilege. If you think second picks have no value - Demko and Hoglander are second picks. If the owner’s weren’t asleep at the wheel, Benning would be down the road. Enough already. If they do this trade, I am done with them, and who exactly is going to populate that team in Abbotsford, with no draft picks of any worth to develop there, because we don’t draft hardly at all from Canadian Junior leagues - normally the players who need multi year development in the AHL. Most of our development now happens in Europe, so why the heck should I get season tickets in Abbotsford. I live in Abbotsford, time to cultivate some support for the Kraken. It looks like they may have a team worth cheering for. What an immense disappointment are the Canucks. Sweet! You're out!!!! This is a great day!!! First Loui now you!!! 2 big anchors gone... All the best with the kraken... Can't say I'll miss yah. Combover you next?! Edited July 23, 2021 by Hogs & Podz 1 1 4 8

Then we ended up acquiring it. @IBatch@aGENT I KNOW you guys weren’t fans of OEL a few weeks ago. Hes been rotting in the desert. I'll reserve judgement till I see him in a Canucks uniform. Anyone would be struggling within that tire fire of a franchise. Honestly, outside of analytics.. how many Coyotes games have you tuned into where their not playing the Canucks?

But I'm scared for the future. It looks like we just renewed another 6 years of cap hell with OEL's contract. I have faith that OEL can step up and be a legit #1 D for the Canucks, but I don't have faith that he can do it for all 6 years. Someone just said this earlier but we pretty much paid Edler the same from age 30-35, which is what OEL will be at the end of his contract. OEL is a Top 2 defenceman and hopefully still in his prime. He's better than Edler and will give us another offensive threat from the blueline 5 on 5 and on the PP. 3 1
