2022 NHL Entry Draft

Recommended Posts

Can you imagine if the Canucks got someone with Schaefer's size and grit? We're talking a line of Schaefer, Pettersson, and Boeser. That could be reminiscent of the Lucic-Krejci-Horton days, though that line might not hold up in today's NHL.

Schaefer would be an outstanding pickup for the Canucks.

Just got home from the Oil Kings vs Thunderbirds game 4. While I’m not a huge Thunderbirds fan, I’m cheering for them since they are the local team. It was a rough loss tonight as Edmonton scored a game winner with 4 seconds left in the game. I posted a couple weeks ago after a Thunderbirds game I attended. I loved Korchinski that night and I do think he’s the real deal. I think he had a solid game but didn’t stand out tonight. He did everything he needed to but never really had any flashy shining moments. I ultimately still would not be upset if he found a way to Vancouver. I do think he’s still a phenomenal talent.

A few guys that caught my eye tonight:

Jeremy Hanzel - I mentioned that the last game I went to he stood out. He was sensational tonight. He was on the ice for a couple goals against, but this kid is a late blooming stud. His passes are crisp and tape to tape. He’s a sneaky good skater. He’s got great senses and a high IQ. His positioning is always on point and if he gets beat, he finds ways to get the puck away from the forward. I’m by know means a scouting expert, but I would bet on it that he finds a way in the NHL one day. I haven’t seen him on drafts board but he’s draft eligible and I genuinely pray we use a late pick on him. I really believe he could be a Diamond in the rough.

Reid Schaefer - I thought it was ironic he was mentioned a few posts ago. This kid is a freaking tank that can skate and has good puck skills. I genuinely believe he can be an NHL player with some work. He had some hits, knocked guys off the puck, had some excellent forechecking, and he plays a pretty darn good two way game. Also would not be opposed to drafting him in a mid-late round. I could definitely see him as a middle six forward.

I don’t think the Oil Kings have more than maybe 2 or 3 draft eligible players that I’m aware of. The draft eligible guys didn’t particularly stand out, but I will say I absolutely love Jake Neighbours. First time seeing him in person and he’s a phenomenal player. If the Blues ever want to make a trade, I wouldn’t mind a guy like that in a Canucks jersey. Good two way skills, pretty good skater, and moderately physical game. Really liked him.

Also worth mentioning, Dylan Guenther was scratched tonight so I didn’t get to see him play which is a stinker. Was really looking forward to it.

'getting bigger and faster' doesn't mean every single pick needs to be over 6'2 - you still don't ignore talent....you can still get bigger and faster and select a few smaller players.

Agree, but with a team of smurfs, I think their focus will be elsewhere... But ofcourse thats just, how I read it...

if real life goes like these draft sims we need to load up on late picks.

It looks like the flaw of these draft sims that I've seen is that they haven't really ranked outside the 1st round realistically which is why there seems to be some solid picks available late.

My thoughts today:

Kulich is starting to remind me more and more of Josh Norris.

Slafkovsky would fit like a glove next to Pettersson.

Jiricek or Nemec would be absolutely phenomenal too. Jiricek would be the steadier option and perhaps the stylistically better fit, but with Nemec (coupled with Hughes), we could one day rival Colorado's defense in terms of offence and mobility.

I still think another top-5 level talent would come a long way in helping us compete down the road. We should feel blessed to already have Petey, Hughes, and Podkolzin...

We have Demko. We. Have. Demko.

I read this and I was surprised how many 1st round draft picks get injured.  I hope Rutherford can do a deep dive into the development department and find out why.  What’s going on with our prospects workout and our doctors.  And it’s not just 1st rounders it’s a lot of prospects.  I remember how management totally screwed Cody Hodgson’s career forcing him to play hurt then we’re furious he wouldn’t play.  He had an injured back and the doctors wouldn’t believe him.  I’d like to see how many of our prospects get hurt compared to other teams prospect development teams.  There are things prospects can do to help prevent injuries.  I think Rutherford has already fired the entire strength and conditioning department.  I hope these new hires treat our prospects with more care.

as far as injuries in general I think there’s always been a problem here, not just prospects.  I don’t know if it’s the travel or if it was Str&Con

Calle Odelius reminds me quite a bit Jonas Brodin. Probably not a ton of offensive upside, but he's an extremely safe pick and probably a lot closer to NHL-ready than most players you'll find in his range (25-35?). Already 188 lbs and a freakish physical specimen - Odelius dominated the Wingate test at the combine, finishing first in peak power output, mean power output and fatigue index. In mean output 2nd to 10th places ranged from 11.8 to 11.3 watts per kilogram. Odelius was 13.5. He also had the 2nd best total time on the V02Max. All this to say, kid is gonna have no problem playing 25 minutes a night.

I remember not being all that familiar with Brodin when he came over, but he made the NHL at 19 and immediately played 23 minutes a game despite very little offensive output. I foresee a similar trajectory for Odelius. His defensive game isn't as polished as Brodin's at the same age, but I think there might be a little more offensive upside there. To my mind Odelius' escapability in his own zone is the best in the entire draft. He's going to be an absolute zone-exit machine. I'd like to see him carry the puck up ice and gain more zone entries though. He also shows some promise on the powerplay, but his shots get blocked a lot. I have him ranked inside the top 20, although admittedly I probably wouldn't take him at 15. Here's a couple more highlights - a nice stretch pass to Liam Ohgren, and a bit of his zone-exit wizardry:
