[Proposal] Canucks - Devils Hughes to New Jersey Blockbuster

Sevrson and two unprotected 1sts. They want a Hughes trifecta, it needs to cost 3 pieces. Because we can.

I would like Smith back in a return package as well. He's basically a "Hughes lite", so it would make sense. I would also like to ship Myers to them to replace Severson and take some cap off our hands.

To Jersey

Hughes

Myers

To Vancouver

Severson

Smith

Unprotected 1st

Canucks defense

OEL-Severson

Smith-Hamonic

Rathbone/Juolevi- Poolman

I would feel a lot more comfortable with that blueline than I do with the blueline we currently have.

Ty Smith and Holtz are really good would make a difference now and Bahl would add size and skill

I just think NJD are hesitant on trading Shane Wright draft 1st rounders and Conor Bedard draft 1st rounders being in the toughest division in hockey and easy to have a bad season

If Hughes is traded to New Jersey, Severson HAS to be included in the return package.

Fair enough.   A part of my motivation for thinking of this proposal however, is the fact that we are in dire need of a top pairing shut down guy.  I’m not sure if Ryan Graves is that guy but he’s pretty damn close I believe (maybe I’m wrong?).   Severson is another offensive defenseman and wouldn’t really help address our current needs (ie a DFD that can take on tough defensive match ups).

We also get back one of our 1sts, along with marrying Myers to NJ for three more years while we lose PK Subbann after one and then go HARD after Parayko or Klingberg on July 1st 2022 (depending on if management at the feels that we’d be better served going after a PMD to replace Hughes, or getting another DFD if guys like OEL and Rathbone are killing it in their roles)

OEL-Hamonic
Graves-Subban [Parayko or Klingberg in 22-23]
Rathbone-Poolman

I like Myers, particularly in the playoffs, but I see where you're going with this.

If I had to pick between Petey and Hughes to trade it would be Hughes. I'd prefer things work out with him here, his skating is so good I do think he'll get a lot better in his own end.

You have to wonder tho if NJ is cooking up some kind of offer.

well, then they can go for coffee. If they want something special there then they have to pay us for it. We don't have to move Hughes.

We have the opportunity to watch a kid that may(likely) become the greatest offensive defenseman in Club history. His defensive play will improve as will his offense once he is paired long-term with a defensive minded partner. I felt he started to look like Rookie Quinn once Hamonic was his partner. Experiments with Benn and a few others was ugly.

Why in the hell are we even considering this?

I'd want an unprotected 1st in the  return package, that's for sure.

I'd want an unprotected 1st + condition that they trade for Loui Eriksson and play him in net (he can score on himself to his hearts content) so we can have a guaranteed 1OA pick and get Wright + Bedard.

4d Chess.

The only way I trade Hughes is if we are getting back Nico Hischier, Ty Smith, 2022 unprotected 1st round, and 2023 unprotected 1st round. I actually think that both teams would be happy, as NJ overpays a bit, but has the Hughes Bros. to lead them for the next 10 years. With that said I would put Nico with Pettey and JT, and deal Boeser to Vegas straight up for Theadore. This puts the Canucks into the very best position to win a cup and be a heavy favorite for years to come. Look at this lineup:

Miller- Pettersson- Hischier

Hoglander - Horvat- Garland

Pearson - Dickerson - Podkolzin

Motte -  Sutter  -  Highmore

OEL   -   Theadore

Smith   -  Myers

Rathbone  -   Hamonic

The really amazing part about this is our defence is even stronger with this lineup then with Hughes in it. Plus what could JB do with the two probable lottery picks over the next two years. These two moves would set this team up for years.

Thoughts...

An honest question:   The team that I'm about to post below..........is it better or worse than the current Canucks?

To NJ:  Hughes + Myers

To Canucks:  Graves + Severson + 1st

Miller-Pettersson-Garland

Hoglander-Horvat-Boeser

Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin

Motte-Sutter-Highmore

MacEwen

OEL-Hamonic

Graves-Severson

Rathbone-Poolman

Schenn

Demko

Halak

I am of the opinion that the team I just posted above joins the NYI’s, Vegas’, Carolina’s, Tampa’s, Colorado’s, and Boston’s in terms of being a perennial 2nd round++ team

Did you not watch the draft with all 3 Hughes brothers had Twitter a buzz, you don’t think New Jersey sees adding Quinn as a Marketing home run with getting the 3rd Hughes brother which so far has the best career this far

If Quinn gets traded it will be because of New Jersey calling Vancouver and not Vancouver shopping him.

I still think Quinn is a great player but I don’t see Vancouver winning a cup with a small #1 defenseman in the Pacific division and would much rather get Smith and Holtz as the main part of a trade with Hughes.

I agree with all of this except the end. I believe Quinn IS the kind of player you can win a cup with. He just needs to be supported by the right players. (And I'm not certain we have that player yet).

I respectfully disagree with you Kloubek

Here is why

I see guys like Krug and Barrie, and they have from time to time had great support, but in the end, they were not the answer

Motre just PP specialists

Points matter, but playoff points

Each player must carry his own weight......

NJ just traded for Graves this season.  Highly unlikely he'd be traded to get Quinn.  And trying to trade Meyers along with him is also unlikely.  Same with asking for 2 x 1sts.

Perhaps...

QH for Smith, Holtz or Bahl, top 10 protected 1st 2022 (that slides to unprotected 1st 2023).

NJ gets the better player and re-unite the brothers.

Canucks get a cost controlled LHD in Smith.  Hopefully OEL rebounds to form to carry the load allowing Smith to ease into the #2 LHD.  Get a top prospect in Holtz/Bahl.  And a 1st 2022 (or potentially an unprotected 1st 2023).

However I wouldn't do this trade unless QH wants out.

I’d be up for that.

While I’m still not entirely sure if I’d be willing to make this deal since moving a fantastic talent like Hughes always needs to be taken into consideration (that, plus having QH and OEL driving offense from the back on two separate pairings is a HUGE advantage), I doubt that the Canucks or NJ would be on board with this.

Along with being a fantastic talent, Hughes is one of Benning’s prized possessions and Hughes has already established himself as an integral part of the core.  I also feel like NJ will take a “wait and see approach” with Ty Smith and Luke Hughes to see if “trading up” for Quinn is really necessary.

While you and I are on the subject of Juolevi, my guess Is that Benning will start OJ on the 3rd pairing this year while Rathbone starts in Abby and logs big minutes there (and getting called up when injuries occur).  Rathbone might have surpassed OJ as a player, but OJ would require waivers to bounce between leagues.

Based on how things unfold this season, my best guess is that the Canucks will trade one of Juolevi or Rathbone with Myers in the off season (as part of a packaged “hockey deal” or as a sweetener to move Myers if Myers’ term and money is deemed to be too risky to other teams).

I do like Myers, but I think the long term key for the Canucks will be in finding a way to upgrade their D *without* trading one of their forwards to do so.

ps - on an unrelated note, I’m going to call it:

Tryamkin replaces Hamonic two years from now.  Yes, it’s a long shot prediction but I believe that this is what will happen.
