-Vintage Canuck-
The Canucks make it official: Quote Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has signed defenceman Luke Schenn to a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $850,000. Schenn, 31, recorded four points (2-2-4), 51 penalty minutes, and registered a +4 rating in 38 games played with Tampa Bay last season. He also appeared in eight playoff games, scoring one goal and collecting nine penalty minutes as he and the Lightning earned their second consecutive Stanley Cup. The 6'2", 225-pound defenceman has played in 797 career regular season games split between Toronto, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Arizona, Anaheim, Vancouver, and Tampa Bay, tallying 152 points (33-119-152) and 619 penalty minutes. In 31 career playoff games, Schenn has six points (3-3-6) and 22 penalty minutes. His 2,567 career hits place fifth in the NHL since 2008.09, while he ranks 11th in the league in blocked shots per 60 minutes (66.83) during that time. Schenn played 18 games with Vancouver during the 2018.19 season, picking up two points (0-2-2) and 81 hits. A native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Schenn has represented Canada at various international competitions throughout his career, capturing gold medals at the IIHF World Junior Championships (2008) and Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament (2006). Schenn was originally drafted in the first round, fifth overall by Toronto in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. https://www.nhl.com/canucks/news/canucks-sign-defenceman-luke-schenn/c-325845426 1

Nuckin Kingsly
Love this as a depth move. Our D core got more size and grit to it now with Schenn and Poolman. Great AAV. Will be reliable to slot in whenever needed, especially if Juo struggles or Rathbone

Popular Post theo5789
I think Luke has a bit or gratitude for our club that he's willing to take on a cheap contract and be a depth role player for us. Before we traded for him, he was basically AHL fodder. He came here and became a bit of a fan favourite after finding a niche for what he should do and got interest from Tampa and now is a two time Stanley Cup champ. His name isn't on the Cup if we didn't "revive" his career. 1 2 3

Miller, Petey, Boeser, Horvat, Hoglander, (even Pearson) fill the rest of the wholes, so why would we be looking for more first or second line guys? If you're taking defense, we added OEL and re-signed Hamonic. Poolman played 20+ minutes in the playoffs for Winnipeg. 1

Our top 6 was never an issue and we even added to it when we didn't really need to. Our issue was depth scoring and depth on defense. We got rid of the bottom 6 bums. And brought in some good players. Dickinson and Garland alone are an upgrade on Rooster, Virtanen, Gaudette, Beagle and Eriksson combined. Schenn is a direct upgrade on Chatfield, as much as I like Chatfield. So yeah, there are lots of great depth pickups for a team that lacked any sort of depth. 1

ChuckNORRIS4Cup
Finally someone who will actually protect the young guys on this team especially Hughes. What Schenn did here last time was exactly what you want in a veteran D, when helping a younger prospect grow in the league, glad he's back because Benning had failed at protecting his young assests since Schenn left.

Defense starts at the neutral zone. That’s the area we need to improve on the most. Doesn’t matter who’s defending if the forwards give the opposition free reign to skate full speed through the neutral zone.

Also helps when the D can actually get the puck out of the D zone, preferably with an open forward in sight. OEL and a much improved top 9 will do wonders here, as will OJ/Rathbone.
