Quote

Justin Dowling has agreed to terms on a two-year deal with an AAV of $750,000. Dowling, 30, played in 27 games last season for the Dallas Stars, recording five points (1-4-5). The 5'10", 180-pound forward has played in 76 career NHL games with Dallas, collecting 14 points (4-10-14), and 15 playoff games, including games five and six of the 2020 Stanley Cup Finals versus Tampa Bay.

A native of Calgary Alberta, Dowling was an undrafted free agent and signed with Dallas on March 26, 2014. He had 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) in 14 playoff games to help Texas win the Calder Cup in 2014. He was named captain Nov. 14, 2018 and led Texas with 40 assists in 62 games in 2018-19.

Dowling has played 438 games in the AHL, including 408 with the Texas Stars and 30 with the Abbotsford Heat where he recorded 304 points (99-205-304).

Dude has almost a season of NHL experience and over a couple rounds of NHL playoff experience.

A ton of AHL experience. He is gonna be a playmaking scorer for Abbotsford.

Good AHL top 6 forward with experience as a leader. Alberta Cochrane dude who went undrafted and made his way up from the ECHL after the WHL.

He’s been a part of the Dallas/Texas Stars for nearly a decade.

That center depth this year compared to last year has grown exponentially better.

Having a scoring center in Petan and two two-way centers in Dowling and Dries. When Lukas Jasek was the only viable option at center to start the campaign, it made me nervous. Real good work by the management to create depth here.

Jasek went to Europe didn't t he?

He did, however, starting last season, he was the only viable "NHL ready" center that they could call up. Canucks really lacked depth in that position the past 2 seasons, now they have plenty.

whats with all these no names being signed? dont we have players for our AHL team already?

Prior to today, I don't think we did actually.  Utica had a slew of players who were only on AHL contracts last year.  The Canucks only had Gadjovich, Focht, Lockwood, Bowey, Woo and Plasek under contract who were presumably AHL bound next season.  The signings today provide depth for both the NHL and AHL Canucks.  Abbotsford could be a pretty good team.

I like all these minor signings but where the hell are the EP, QH, OJ, and Dickinson signings???

:(

What's the rush? They're all RFA's, they're not going anywhere.

The way Benning and co have been stocking up Abbotsford, they're gonna be fun to track next season.

The Canucks also have a bit more depth to pull from than in past seasons.  It sounds like most of the Abbotsford signings today are at least two-way contracts.

For example, Nic Petan could be an interesting call up for spot duty in the event of injury.  Dowling too.  This is important as they will eventually need "restock" Abbotsford with draft picks alongside free agent signings like this.  If they can make Abbotsford a fun and successful team to play for, then it might actually help with continuing to keep a healthy level of depth at the AHL for the NHL Canucks.

The success of Abbotsford could def go a long way to helping our depth, no doubt. It sounds like Abbotsford is an attractive place to play for AHL guys, or NHL tweeners, that'll be nice to have going forward. But yeah, two way contracts and depth stocked away in the minors will be huge.

Gonna be fun as we see more of our prospects gradually trickle into Abbotsford.

Krakheads will be doing the same thing in another year when they establish their farm team too
