Time will tell if OEL can put up the numbers has done in the past but if he gets 45+pts and is positive +/- for the next 3 years then the money was worth it. So far he is 4/5 on his to do list and hopefully he can make it 5/5 in the next few weeks. The only thing we are missing is moving Myers, somehow, someway for Connor Murphy. Re-unite OEL with the player he played his best with and put him in the absolute best position for a rebound possible. Would rather have Tanev than Hamonic on the 2nd pairing but it is what it is. Tre Mac
He dug a huge hole last offseason but managed to crawl out of it on Wednesday. Aside from acquiring OEL you can't fault any move since then.

No. No we’re not missing that very specific and therefore very improbable demand coming out of your head. This team is much better today than it was two weeks ago. And that, by a far enough margin to make the playoffs. Just the air is lighter. The hopes more realistic.

Probably need to correct corpse for corps At least the corpse is one of the deepest in the league. Nothing worse than a shallow grave. I credit John Weisbrod. I’m not sure whether or not he has much of a mind for hockey, but based on his career history, I suspect he’s an expert is knowing how to properly dispose of corpses.
IBatch
No matter what happens, for better or worse, this is the off season JB legacy will be judged upon. I loved his last off season. This is what he did with all the saved contract money. Still might be more coming after RFAs with Ferland on the LTIR....

And the OEL move started the domino affect we saw clearing cap.
Sativika
I like OEL. Always have. I did think it odd that he signed long term in Arizona, knowing full well that SC contention was never gonna be a factor there during his time. Ya' gotta respect that loyalty! So I'm happy we got him now. It's a fresh start for him in a new location and in a hockey mad market ta' boot. What's not to like. If anything, if he's at least as good as Eagle was when he was OEL's age, then we're ahead. I'm not worried at all.

No thanks. Myers was our best all around D last year and in the bubble. With Edler gone we need him still. 1

Myers himself is a #4 calibre dman. Ideally, the guy playing in Myers’ top pairing spot would be a nasty defensive oriented stay at home type guy that could be the “ying to the yang” for the more offensive minded OEL. Instead, I believe that Benning sees OEL as the “two way guy” that can somehow cover for Myers’ defensive shortcomings but I think OEL may have been miscast here. If you put OEL with Hamonic, Hughes with Poolman, and Myers with Rathbone/Juolevi the blueline starts to look quite a bit better. We don't need to be married to the Hughes-Hamonic pairing. 2

Kragar
I'm happy enough. No big splash on UFA means no huge overpayment on one of them. I don't think there was a bad signing in the bunch, and I am comfortable with the OEL trade. I believe the D got better, and who knows what is going to happen with better coaching. Was hoping to see a good year outta Schmidt, but if he really was unhappy and/or clashing with JT, then it is what it is, and moving him was the right thing to do.

philtbc829
I give JB a passing grade....at least he moved out some of his mistakes but obviously the big move has a BIG question mark on it....I imagine he is praying heavily to the Hockey Gods that OEL has a BIG rebound year and that Garland performs as expected.... Just sad that he couldn't clear enough space to get Krejci....way better than Davidson and Sutter combined....sigh....wonder why Krejci is still available....sigh....one can dream...he would have been awesome as a canuck...

Wait until you see his cap hit before worrying about him vs Sutter ... one of the few guys in our bottom six who actually could score a goal(s) last year at 1 million, one of JBs better signings.

Popular Post Coconuts
Lot of wait and see. Obviously dumping all that cap and coming away with Garland was a win. OEL could go either way, that's a helluva commitment. Arizona retaining some cap makes it a bit better though. I figure OEL will look better on a better team, all OEL's done for most of his career is be a top player on a team that loses a lot. Whether I'm right or not remains to be seen. I like how Benning and co have stocked up Abbotsford, it'll benefit any of our prospects who play there and provide us with some solid depth. The Sutter deal is great, anyone who complains about Sutter at 1x1 is out of their mind. Dude wins faceoffs, plays heavy defensive minutes, PK's, is good in the locker room, is a known quantity, and can chip in the odd goal. Could have easily gotten more term and money elsewhere imo. Schenn is a depth guy we've had before, back from having won a couple cups. If he was good enough to play games for Tampa he's good enough for us. Good contract, good depth guy. By all accounts Dickinson is a good defensive player, what his deal ends up being remains to be seen, but defensive players are important. Solid add at a fair cost. Hammer's deal is fair, if anything we probably got a discount. Glad to have him back, I figure he'll start this season off looking better than last with a training camp, preseason, ect. He hadn't played in forever when he jumped in with us last season. Halak is a solid, experienced goaltender on a short contract at reasonable dollars. Nothing to complain about. I'm fine with the Poolman deal, 2.5 ain't a ton and he should be serviceable. He's not the guy on his pairing you're going to count on for offense, but he'll likely PK and mind our defensive zone. We've got guys who can rush, shoot, and pass the puck already. Having a guy who brings a bit less in the offensive zone won't hurt us too much if he can play effectively in our end. Still waiting on Petey and Hughes, so I can't make a judgement regarding that yet. Edited July 30, 2021 by Coconuts 1 3
Popular Post Podz19
I was a big Benning supporter until the last few years. Initially, I felt like the usually trolly media types and vancouver "troll" fans (you know the one's who called those of us who are objective, "benning bros") were being their usual toxic selves. Then the last few years I started to question his ability to do anything other than draft very well. I have to say, he was getting an F from me last year, this year, so far, he's getting an A+. He has done an excellent job thus far. Not perfect but hell the team is better, more cap room, and he's literally addressed every issue other than having a #1RD and you're aren't getting one of those unless you're selling alot of talent or developing them yourself. He's now given Green a team to work with, and Green has zero excuses. He's given Green a defensive coach, because Green clearly didn't want to get rid of Baumgartner. As importantly, he's shown Bo, Petey, Boeser, Miiler and Hughes, that he wants to surround them with REAL help and for them to now take over and show they can lead the way. I think the next 6-8 years with this group (if they can keep the core together) is going to be really fun! This team is ready to compete, ready to make the playoffs, and has the "makeup" of a cup contender. Now its up to the coaches and the players themselves to get the best out of themselves and go get one. ie Our core has to keep improving, players like Podz, Gadj, Mckewan, Motte, Juolevi, Rathbone and the other young ones have to step up and show they can play and be important role players. That's all that matters now. If you look at that latter list of names, they all have talent, all can bring important aspects to the "team", but they have to do it. Well done JB, looking forward to whats to come with this group. I've been a fan for 30 years, this group has potentially the best talent the Canucks have ever had (depth wise). No one can call him "Benning' anymore. GCG Edited July 30, 2021 by Podz19 1
