[discussion] Time to trade Oli Jouveli?

Exactly right. You let Rathbone develop in Abby, let OJ show his worth and if we have a problem of too much talent on the left side you deal from strength. you then trade him for a young RD who may be more physical and make a hockey trade.

Not sure why the OP wants to sell low and try to get a second for a kid who showed well last year until he got the worst hit on the team from covid.

Well he was also a kid that had chatfield played a lot over him before covid happened. Doesnt sound like a coach thats super impressed, just have to wait on see how he does in training camp.

Probably better to have OJ up here then and have Rathbone go and dominate the AHL.  Injuries are inevitable and so it’s not like Rathbone would be getting deprived of NHL ice time anyways.  On the flip side, Rathbone can log big minutes in the AHL and expedite his development.

Yes exactly. We all got excited watching him play those few games last year cause he looked really good but I don’t know if it was that hard to not look out of place considering half our team was injured/recovering from covid.

He going to be a damn good player I bet but him spending some more time in the AHL would only be good and chances are he won’t be down there for too long.

Or he knocks the doors down in training camp and Green has to make tough decisions. Time will tell.

actually you’re misinterpreting

Chatfield is a RD

Juolevi is a LD

So suggesting Green choosing JC over OJ is a bit ridiculous since they play different positions. As such, your interpretation is invalid.

also JV played 18 games

Juolevi played 23 and that’s after having to miss most of the post covid games. As i said earlier, it’s common knowledge now, OJ was out post covid because he was the worst hit on the team and lost a lot of weight and his fitness.

Facts matter bro

You’re right. Chatfield essentially played because he was right handed. It’s no secret why JB went out and got so many RH defencemen through free agency this year

23 isnt that many especially when rathbone looked quite a bit better when he got in.

Ah yes, lets sell low on another d-man. No thanks, this is Vancouver, we need 8 nhl d-men. If we end up having 4 clearly top 4 LHD, then we can trade one for a nice piece. But neither Juolevi or Rathbone will get us anything more valuable than they are to us right now.

I think it will really depend on training camp. Juolevi, Hunt & Rathbone will be given a fair shake at fighting for the 3rd pairing LD position. If Rathbone is the clear candidate then I could see Juolevi being moved. Green actually puts a lot of stock into training camps (which is great for real internal competition), and Rathbone did show some success, incl. with Tyler Myers who is likely the RHD without a partner right now. Saying that, OJ could've been harshly effected by COVID and may come back and out compete Rathbone for the spot. That would be the best case scenario since Boner is waiver exempt and could dominate the AHL while being a hour drive away for call-ups of brief and long lengths.

He looked quite a bit better to you, and others.

Ollie looked better to others.

If I had to send one down and keep the other then Rathbone goes to Abbottsford, and waits for an injury call up.

Because of asset management Rathbone likely starts in Abby, unless he shows so well in training camp that they have to keep him in Van.  He will have to demonstrate an ability to kill penalties though, since you don't want Hughes out shorthanded.  Juolevi looked good for the most part last year imo.  I really like his game in the offensive zone, his stretch passes are outstanding and would have led to more points for him last year if their forwards were more talented.  His transition defense needs to improve but he's probably never played on a team that gives up so many odd man rushes and has so little back pressure from the forwards.  This makes defending the rush very difficult even for the best defencemen in the game.  Montreal's vaunted defense looked fairly ordinary against Tampa when the forwards couldn't apply back pressure.  I suppose he could have just taken penalties to nullify scoring chances when he was beat like Edler, and rely on the pk to bail the team out.

I like Both him and Rathbone, difficult to decided who I would give the job to. They both showed last year they belong. Jouveli has all the traits to be a big mobile top 3 two way defenders with more emphasis on defending. Rathbone has something uniquely special to what he can bring to the game which I think would be hard to find again.

I think Juolevi can find himself a home on the roster if he can prove himself on the PK. Looking at the left side when thinking of OEL, Hughes, Rathbone.... PK isn't what immediately springs to mind when discussing their attributes.

That being said Left shot 3rd pairing pk specialist isn't really a hot commodity.

No, come on now. They just see it differently. To be fair I can see why they believe you dislike OJ. I think you believe OJ well not get his fair shot here. You need to clear this up and stop playing games (of sorts). What do you think of OJ?

Pretty obvious what i want. I want him to play in the NHL but he wont get that chance with the nucks because hes just not going to be good enough to outplay rathbone at training camp. He deserves a chance to be a fulltime dman in the league somewhere. If its not in Vancouver than trade him for a draft pick if we can. This literally doesnt change a thing about the current roster since he is unlikely to win a spot. That doesnt mean i think hes crap but he hasnt impressed enough to be a long term guy here. We are set for the next 6 years here now.

Good, I am high on Rathbone too. I agree OJ should be playing in the NHL.

amazingly, we generally go through defenseman like they are toilet paper due to injuries. Who’s to say both players don’t see 50 games each as a result. End of the day OJ is ready and needs to have get ice to develop, and he will, and moreso because it’s becoming clear his long term role on the canucks is as a 2D or 3D, and most likely the latter if Rathbone develops as expected.

That being said, Rathbone has played all of 16 games of professional hockey, 8 in the AHL and 8 in the NHL, while i love the kid too, people as usual are assuming a lot at this stage. I remember a lot of people screaming about Shinkaruk, Gaudette, Jordan Subban, on and on. And while I do think Rathbone is a great talent, let’s also be a bit objective, vs shiny new toy syndrome.

Rathbone is hopefully our future 2LD, so you let him play in the AHL in the 1LD role to prepare, you call him up as needed as he’s 45 minutes away, and you develop OJ into the 3LD role, a more offensive Tanev so to speak.

If we get to a point where we need to make space for Rathbone in a year or even 2, you can always move Juolevi for a lot more than now, and or move OEL and retain some salary.

Good read, and why training camp and pre season is so important. There seems to always be someone that steals a spot in the line up.

Like the poster above stated too. I can see that working out perfectly for the Canucks. Camp and per season is going to be interesting. Who they invite to the camp, may change things too.
