[Report] Evander Kane accused of betting on Sharks games

a bit repetitive... but I doubt the soon-to-be-ex-wife would know that EK throws games. or that he bet on sharks games. maybe she'd know if he bet on hockey. but it sounds like he's doing it with a bookie or offshore (probably with a physical rep who settles with him every week or two i.e. EK doesn't need to log in and have money at these offshore internet sites.

but isn't it bad enough for Gary Bettman that someone who just went through bankruptcy is tooling around Europe with some model while his wife has no money for food for his daughter. that part could easily be verified..... isn't this unprofessional/unbecoming/amoral conduct? and EK is serial repeat offender.

how did he skate with the league incurring a $500k gambling debt at a Las Vegas casino during a playoff series? and then stiffing the casino?

or his violent conduct towards women in buffalo?

the strangest thing I find is that if you mistreated women before Me-Too/Cancel-Culture AND also were dealt with (courts and public opinion) prior to that, it seems you get a pass with the "cancel culture" crowd.. Bill Clinton, Schwarzenegger etc.. not sure how Cosby would fit into my narrative but that was really big and many people came forward with similar stories.

honestly, is EK's "lifetime work" not sufficient for a lifetime ban? or at least, a one-year ban?... regardless of what comes out of gambling enquiry

I remember meeting Evander back in 2006 when he was just drafted by the Giants. A real nice, very polite, kid with a slender soccer player-type physique. Hard to square that memory up with the guy he is now. His parents and sisters would be at the games and they seemed like a terrific, supportive family.

I guess money changed the equation far too much to handle.

There is obviously a double standard with wealth, in most cases. It's not ideal for one to do stuff when you have money, but principles can be purchased.

Kevin Kurz on Evander Kane:

“Several key players informed team brass that if Kane was going to be a part of the Sharks going forward, they didn’t want to be. That’s how bad it got, and how complicated this situation has become.”

Kurz adds guys were going into GM Doug Wilson’s office all year long saying Kane had to go, all he’d say is, “All teams have locker-room issues.” “‘Sharks ignored everything,’ said an agent who represents at least one player on the team. ‘Team turned a blind eye.’”

“Displeasure with Kane stemmed from general disrespect for team rules: routinely late for games/practices, not adhering to dress code, poor practice habits… Sources indicated frustration among Sharks that Kane was permitted to get away with whatever he wanted, no repercussions.

Sharks did explore trading Evander Kane earlier this summer to no avail. A known disruption in the dressing room (as he reportedly has been at times in his career particularly during a stint in WPG) is virtually untradeable (especially at 4x$7M).

Man, sounds like a mess. He's their best player, but it doesn't sound like there's any way they can keep him on the team.

I guess the Sharks are hoping that the NHL finds evidence that Kane betted on his games. Because if he did, they'll be able to void his contract and walk away.

The problem for the Sharks is that Kane is in the age group where he's a key player for them moving forward as their core ages/moves on (they have already lost Thornton, Marleau and Pavelski).

If Kane really is such a disruption in the dressing room then perhaps contract termination could be addition by subtraction for the team no matter how painful the loss of his skillset may be.  I doubt any team wants to give up assets for Kane with all this news surrounding him.

When Kane is on, he's a very good power forward.  It's too bad there are all these distractions.

Clearly nobody in the league wants this guy anymore.  One thing is to be an idiot off the ice, but another is to take it with you into the dressing room.  If his contract is voided, I wouldn't be surprised if he has played his last game in the NHL.  He'll probably end up living on the streets one day if his gambling addiction continues while not making 7 figure salaries.

If Kane doesn’t seek help for his gambling he will be on the street, but he won’t be living.

the Sharks have more problems than Kane, that team is in real trouble. I suspect we'll see a new GM sooner than later and a total teardown.

True.  They have already taken a massive step back and it's hard to see how guys like Meier and Hertl are going to propel them forward.  Burns and Karlsson aren't getting any younger (can't believe Burns is 36).

Such a contrast with the Ducks.  Both teams are probably not going to be great in the next 1-2 years, but the Ducks could start improving significantly sooner than expected given all their young talent.

EK's deal is just brutal as well.

This is a bit surprised for me. I guess it's no secret that Kane has had locker room issues in the past. But I always said if there was a team he should be able to jive with it's with a team with a strong veteran leadership core like the Sharks.

And from what I heard in his early time with San Jose he seems to like it there and the team seems to like him

Can’t see how the NHL can get the evidence on Kane. It’s not that easy to prove. A scorned soon to be ex wife testimony may not be enough. I also doubt she cooperates. She stands to lose out on a lot of money from him if his contract gets terminated for breach of contract. It is in her best interest to zip it so she later collects alimony and child support.

Also, I wouldn’t put much faith in the NHL “investigation”. They don’t need the bad press….

That’s bad enough all by itself but to make it even worse (in case you didn’t think it was possible)  he then welshed on the deal.

It’s no wonder this guy’s teammates hate his guts, and want him gone.
