For 6 mill , Myers better be killing penalties.

Not sure what he does if not that.

All of our D-men have roles to bring

Hughes 1st until PP and offense on the first pair

OEL 2ND  unit PP and 1st unit PK offense on the 2nd pairing. Relieve pressure from Hughes

Myers 2nd unit PP and offense on the 3rd pair. Pressure release for OEL and Hughes.

Poolman 1st unit PK and defensive partner for either Hughes or OEL

Hamonic 2nd unit PK and defensive partner for OEL or Hughes

Rathbone 2nd unit PK and defensive partner with a vet like Myers. I Think this is a balance not a complementary pairing. Both can be offensive and back one another up defensive

He can kill penalties too, his reach comes in handy and he can plant himself in front of the net.

I would consider him a 2nd unit pk guy not a top unit defensive d-man

Is he willing to take slap shots to the face to save a goal?

Tanev is an excellent defencemen. One of the best defensive guys in the entire league imo.

I think those are bigger shoes to fill then credit is given here.

If Poolman is a Tanev lite we are laughing, anything else is bonus.

Im cautiously optimistic about Poolman and I think everyone should be instead of worrying about 2.5 million down the road lol

Saying he will be better than Tanev ever was is some unrealistic crazy talk right now.  He is only than 2.5 years younger than Tanev and has hardly played in the league, whereas Tanev had already been one of the best defensive D men in the league at that age.

Literally the most popular video of Poolman is him taking a puck to the face blocking a shot…

.

The next one is him catching fists to his face in his one pro career hockey fight (first fight since 2013-14)

both end up with him leaving the ice bleeding…

Superman is Poolman (truth, justice and the Canucks way)

Tanev is Batman:

If his partner will be Hughes, I think he will surprise a lot of people. As long as he isn't adventurous and just cover Quinn whenever he does his pinches he will be fine.

Sticking up for his teammate there. Love to see it

Yep, the reports are that he is a good team guy.

A tough guy not so much.  The folks who posted suggesting they are expecting a truculent physical guy like Mitchell or Bieksa are probably going to be disappointed.  He was an offensive D who is trying to fit into a different role as an NHLer to carve out a career.

We can hope tor him to be like Hamhuis… a guy who is OK at a lot of things but not noticeably great at any… those guys can be really useful.

Yeah that’s a little optimistic prediction.

What I am hoping for is a guy who can do grunt work and play 17-19 minutes a night. The combination of size/speed is nice.

Typically we’ve seen Greener hardly play his 3rd pairing with guys in the 12-14 minute range in the past there. We’ll have someone there that can play more now.

With Poolman he should have at least 5 guys that can play 17+ minutes a night. The 6th guy OJ/Rathbone will probably be eased in.

Might actually be able to balance the minutes a bit better.

I have no idea how it is going to work out or what the pairings will be.

Whoever is Quinn’s partner may be the low minute man overall, or right down there with Rathbone/Juolevi.  Quinn will get an extra 2-5 minutes per game  on the PP than his partner…meaning his partner is likely in the 17-19 minute range most nights.

We need big 5v5 and shut down minutes from some pairing and that almost has to be OEL on the left side… but is Poolman going to be his partner or Myers?  My guess out of the gate is Myers… but who knows.

OEL-Myers

Hughes-Hamonic

Rathbone-Poolman/Schenn

Above in another post I suggested he would (as a stylistic comparable if we are lucky) be more like Hamhuis than Tanev.

Tanev was a defensive specialist and was one of the best in the game at that… and still was as of last year as Calgary’s best D.

Hamhuis was more of a generalist who could do a bit of everything and could complement different types of partners.

Poolman spent his whole development as more of an offensive D… until the last little bit in Winnipeg where he was expected to take on more defensive responsibility and did OK.  He doesn’t really seem to be a defensive specialist like Tanev at all.

If he can be just Ok defensively he will be an upgrade to what we have.  If he can put up 15-25 points a season that is also in his possible skill set.

I think both OEL and Hughes will be on the first PP. Why take away one of OEL's top traits, he is a beast on the PP. Canucks have many options on the second unit. The puck movement between OEL and Hughes would be world class.

That's right I am predicting Tucker Poolman will be better than Tanev. He will bring the same defensive game as Tanev but bring more grit and offensive side than Tanev ever did. I predict That Poolman will play in the top 4 as a partner either with Hughes or OEL with Myers on the third pairing with Rathbone.

I make this predicting because I simply ask myself who is going to be the defensemen on the PK.

Hughes, no.

Myers, no

OEL and Poolman yes

Rathbone and Hamonic yes

Poolman will have to play top PK mins and this will make him better defensively. I fully expect that Shaw will be running the PK and in extension the defense. This signing screams Shaw all over it. Poolman is a player who will give a team everything because it took everything from him to get here and under the guidance of Shaw he will even become better. If Ian Clark is the top goalie coach I would call Shaw a top 3 defensive coach. Poolman will be our next Burrows but just on defense. The guy making 2.5 mill who deserves 5 mill.

Have you counted how many of your predictions that came true?

Demko is a clear start no

Well, I believe almost everyone had Demko as No 1. We couldn’t agree on wich year though.

Primarerly becuse he was younger and therefore suited Petey and the others better.

But this prediction about Poolman is bold.

Especially since Hamonic is closer experience wise. Hamonic had good reputation before Covid and the fall out with the Flames.

Tanev is a beast and Bennings worst mistake when he let him walk.

Think play off last season. With Tanev we probably would have had a fun ending.
So if Poolman can take on the pressure Tanev could we’re set to go. B)

Horvat is not coming off the 1st unit
