No Montreal Canadiens player will wear the "C" for the 2021-22 campaign, general manager Marc Bergevin announcedMonday.

Weber won't play this season due to ankle, foot, knee, and thumb injuries. His playing career is likely over.

The 36-year-old served as captain for three seasons, taking over following Max Pacioretty's departure in 2018.

The Habs last went without a captain during the 2014-15 campaign after Brian Gionta left as a free agent.

Weber's cap hit is 7.857M per year for another 5 years.

But, he is only due to be paid 6M this coming year then 3M the following year, then 1M per year for each of the last 3 years.

If he is able to play in the playoffs the league should take a close look at any future claim that he is too injured to return after that.

Mtl would face a mighty big recapture penalty if Weber simply retired (not due to injury).

Yes, this should happen, but it won’t happen.  I think that cap recapture would kill the Nashville franchise.  The League can’t afford to lose any US teams, especially one that’s actually doing well financially.

Quick rough math if he wasn't injured but just chose to retire and skip the last 3 years at 1M per year.

Cap recapture penalty would approximately be 4M per year for 3 years for Nashville and 7M per year for 3 years for Mtl.

So wouldn't kill Nashville but would severely hamper Mtl.

It most certainly would! Please retire!

Most players wouldn’t do that to their teams though.

We saw that in Luongo because of how crappy he was treated here. He simply didn’t care and I didn’t blame him.

Because he wasn’t given one start for the game at BC Place?  meh.  He got traded to the team where his boss wanted him to go in the end.

Really. You think it was just that?

Luongo was the greatest goalie in Canuck history. He played his heart out for this team, brought them to the Finals, wins a couple Team Canada Olympic Golds and gets embarrassed in front of all of BC Place as a bench warmer. I was there. The entire crowd was booing that idiot Torts and we were all calling out Looos. This was the last straw that broke the camels back. This isn’t how you treat the greatest Canuck goalie.

Don’t forget, previous to this season,  FA had gone to his actual house in Florida in the off season and convinced Lui to come back. He felt done here. The disrespect was too much. Moron Gillis carried Cory for way too long. This was Luongo’s team. That’s why he signed the lifetime contract. This sideshow story kept repeating every game and in every media scrum. Idiot Gillis in the end lost a bit of value when his hand was finally forced to trade Cory, the entire NHL knew that and that’s why a 1st was all he could get (thank God we lucked out with Bo).

It’s a combination of factors from the incompetence of the GM not dealing with the goalie controversy to that idiot Torts in slapping him with that final disrespect.

You have this completely backwards. Montreal has next to no recapture if Weber. retires. On the other hand Nashville has close to $25m total recapture to repay

Still all you’ve specifically mentioned was that one home game (which is what I said) and talked about ambiguous “disrespects”.  What were these other “disrespects”?  I still say meh on missing that one meaninglessness home game.  He just used that as an excuse for other perceived slights (whatever they might have been).  FA likely had some part in wanting Torts as head coach in the first place here.
