What in the hell...

My intention is to point out what I think is a problem with our fanbase. A little self-reflection doesn't hurt, y'know? Please debate the substance of my comments, not whatever assumptions you're making about my personal make-up. That's an incredible reach for a discussion board that's done all through text - you have no context for what the tone behind my comments could be - it's all text at the end of the day.

Well, time to hop off to the Federal Election Thread...discussions there are a lot less...emotionally charged lol

Lol, some fans are so butthurt and just twisted inside out over this. It's truly laughable. I can't believe the stick (well actually I can) you're getting for pointing out the honest truth. Fans are losing their minds over this in a completely toxic way. The Jack Hughes thing is so funny it's pathetic. Like they actually expect he's supposed to come up with excuses as to why we sucked. I can't understand the angst at a guy pointing out simple truths while supporting his brother and fellow NHL'er in a contract battle. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. At the end of the day they'll sign for what they sign for. I'm more concerned about Petterson as he's really got some special talent. Quinn on the other hand is a pip squeak who showed he struggles mightily on the d side and will revert to playing rover when the chips are down. Not a good trait. He's not worth any more than $6 right now. Anything at 8 or over long term I hope we trade him. I would take Ekblad and a pick in a heartbeat to be honest.

I agree with those who say they will sign soon and be all smiles at the press conference and this will all be forgotten next week.

here's a question

With the addition of Garland,OEL, Dickinson, Podz, Poolman

Another year of development for Hogz and Juolevi

Can the Canucks make the playoffs without Petterson and Hughes?

Can they? Yes. Will they? Unlikely. As much as we've criticized them last year, they're still our two best players. Its been hard enough making the playoffs with them in the lineup. Without them you're just making it harder, even if you'd added around them.

This to me was obvious that, that was their plan when EP changed agents.

its too bad because while yes the agents get them the $, it also sets the kids up for a lot of potential criticism. Its one thing to sign a friendly 3x7, quite another to demand close to 10. Any mistakes will be magnified and harped on, meanwhile the agents make their money.

People will drag Jim  under the bus to prove "he's doing it again".  But I commend him for standing his ground because the future of this team not only rests in these two, but in others who also have to be considered long term.

I definitely agree with this. Jim's got a reputation as a lame duck GM, so it would be very easy for him to just cave to whatever the Petey/Hughes camp wants to solve the short term issue of simply having them signed. I appreciate that he's still looking out for the long term future as well.

No. They can not. You do not replace top end NHL talent easily.

A month or so sure, not 82 games.

None of us know what's going on within these discussions, both of these guys deserve big raises, but bridge deals work best.

Benning is not talking to Hughes and Pettersson directly, he's talking to their agents, who are trying to squeeze the team for the most salary and other benefits that they can. THAT is their job and what they get paid for.

Fans are posting like this is a personal attack on the team, that Hughes and Pettersson want the best deals that they can get.

Theres a saying that people show their true colors when it comes to drinking and money.

Hughes and Petterson have lost a lot of respect from me throughout these negotiations if reports are true regarding what they are askign for.

I am team JB here and I wish there was a way for fans to collectively support Benning publicly to not give in and give JB a pass if he is unable to sign these 2 and have them sit for a while.

They havent done enough to be doing this.

Even if they eventually sign decent contracts and perform lights out, what is their next asking price? Mitch Marner money?

If JB was to stand ground and sit them until they sign for a fair amount, I would say our window for winning is the duration of that contract because once that expires, we're gonna go through this again and at that point, if they are truly worth Marner comparables, we would need to strongly consider trading them if we can't sign them by TDL of their expiration year.

It's absurd that our 2 best RFAs have teamed up and are prepared to hold out when we can clearly see that there is enough capspace to sign both of them.

The agents work for the players, not the other way around.

Petey and Hughes are ultimately in control

It reeks of entitlement.

So if they sign these massive contracts and get scrutinized and judged by the public, if they can't live up to it, I can see them wanting to get out of dodge...

Can you show me an example of someone "losing their mind"?

The words you use would more likely lend itself to that.  Whenever butthurt, pathetic and toxic and all those describing words are used it's generally to exaggerate and blow up reasonable discussion.

I think it's a great negotiation game so far by 40 and 43. I always side with the players.

Most of it is a lie. They all want money (for the most part). Team friendly deals are all talk.

I, too, don't  like this strength in numbers thing they're doing with an agent who's negotiating both deals.  At this point, he's becoming the bad guy to me (not that there has to be one...but it feels like there may be one).

I liked the fact that he was handling both at first because it meant he had a good idea of our budget and could calculate accordingly.  But not to have him act as if it's a 2-1 combo deal.  And in the camp/environment where the mentality is that "this team is the worst".  Petey wants to play on a winner and if Jack and co. feels this team is a bust and are using that as leverage (maybe even for his own situation down the road), it might negatively influence Petey...even if subconsciously.  HE'S my top priority in all of this.

There's also a slight, underlying story (interest) that's about brothers sticking together that's sliding into this.  Tkachuking.

And the potential to negatively impact Petey concerns me.  I hate it.  It's a game that's played in negotiations where things can derail unexpectedly if being influenced strongly behind the scenes.

This agent is the driving force here and let's face it, his interests aren't all about what's best for the team or his clients.  He's looking to cash in here for the max and probably is standing in the way of things more than he's helping them along at this point.  Every other day isn't good enough...the season'll start soon.  Your job is to be there, at the table, getting things done.  Not popping in and out.

I'll direct my anger there, at agents who get to cash in on their client's success.  And sometimes try to do so prematurely.

People will drag Jim  under the bus to prove "he's doing it again".  But I commend him for standing his ground because the future of this team not only rests in these two, but in others who also have to be considered long term.

I don't blame the kids at all here. Yes there are adults, but they are young. I'm sure the agency has influenced them a lot and have them convinced that hey are shielding them. Its a huge decision and anyone of that age would need a lot of help in making it. I don't think families would help here either, as none of them have made a multi-million dollar deal either. Add to that, Quinn is just the first of three deals their agent is setting up. Just so much self interest here on the agents part to stick it to Benning.

The agent is playing a bit of dirty pool here in manipulation thought he media, likely suggesting Petey go to Michigan, etc.

Yes. So I never want to hear about a player "just wanting to win" again then.

Totally. I mean I don't have proof but if you wanted to win why would you sign in Van?

I ain't bashing here but you should take league minimum to play in Tampa.....or every player should sign in Van for league min.

I can only recall 3 really friendly team deals.

You especially don't take a team friendly deal at 22. Could have a career ending injury at any time. Maybe at 33 once you have made you money and want a cup.

Horvat signed a team friendly deal

So did Boeser

So did the Sedins

So did Edler

So did Salo

Maybe we are spoiled as we had great character guys who sacrificed for the team previously.

I am curious though.  maybe i'm missing something

Why do you side with the players? My thought would be that a a fan of the team, I want our GM to stretch the money as much as possible and sign as much talent as possible when restricted by a team salary cap.

Signing someone for maximum value in a salary cap era has a direct correlation to who else a GM can sign.

I want the Canucks to be a perrenial contender and a cup champion.

Best way this can be achieved is by signing Petterson and Hughes to fair deals (fair is relative I suppose)
