At this point, I'd be happy if the Canucks gave Petey a 9 mil x 8 years contract. Same dollar as Makar but we buy few more UFA years.

Then, sign Hughes to a bridge deal around 5.5-6 mil.

I doubt that’s the issue. If I had to guess I would say his agent is delaying until free agency for an offer sheet to maximize the contract value for his client.

So be it. Whatever it takes. Might have to lose JT miller in the future for it but what choice do we have?

I think you need to think objectively about a couple things.

1.) Players hire an agent to handle their business affairs. Their job is to maximize the contract value and term for their clients. Pettersson is not “holding the team hostage.” His agent is negotiating on his behalf, and we don’t know which side is doing what at this point as it hasn’t been made public.

2.) Pettersson is an elite talent entering  his prime years and this contract is crucial to his financial future not only in the interim, but over his lifetime, as playing careers are relatively short and can end at any time. One bad hit. One bad play. I think you need to remove the emotion from your thinking and put yourself in the players shoes.

would you consider a no trade clause for either of these two?

I would not give a ntc or nmc to either of these players.

Neither is Crosby, Ovie, McDavid level, and things have changed out in the real world. Cap cannot be assumed to rise anymore.

Countered by " I love the Canucks but any team that won't pay their best player max money, is really not worth following".

Everybody wants someone else to play for less or make less; but nobody goes into work and asks the boss to pay them less.

So the good news is that Pettersson will be signed soon. Either the parties come to an agreement or Canucks match an offer sheet.

If an offer sheet is matched Canucks should try to acquire a healthy Eichel and let Pettersson suffer in Buffalo.

I'd hold your horses on that assessment first, this is just day 1 of UFA, and the first qualifying offer is tendered. No one is holding anyone hostage.

Also this kind of stuff is usually a lot on the agent rather than the young players

So, after the Holtby buyout and the Garland signing, we have $20,139,341 in cap space plus 3,500,000 in Ferland's ltir to play with.

Between Hughes and Petterson, we could spend 16 mil of that and still afford a backup goalie, a bargain and mid-range RD and a bargain 4C.  That's without moving Schmidt or anyone else.

So I can't see that there's any reason to panic here.  We can lock Hughes and Petterson up long term if that's what both parties want.  It they don't, then the bill will be cheaper and we can afford better options in free agency.  Good either way.  It will be interesting to see how it plays out, but no cause for worry.

It will be ironic if we're forced to give up Schmidt for a return lower than the 3rd we used to acquire him because someone forced us into the exact same cap situation Vegas was in last year haha. See folks, asset management matters, just as much as scouting.

But i agree, we'll end up keeping both. It's an easy match for Petey on our end, even if the contract is $10 mil. It's workable.

Got a 3rd back for Nate. No irony.

$26M in space. Petey is getting paid tonight!
