It is a bit of a dangerous game spending all the cap on filler players before getting this work done.

I guess they can make sure to sign Petterson first now because he could get an offer sheet and make sure the agent knows there is only so much money available, so the more Petterson gets, the less Hughes gets... it is just math at this point.

If Petterson actually did sign a big offer sheet and we matched, that means REALLY putting the screws to Hughes who has no leverage because of his status.  He signs or he sits.

Prolly JB made sure because that would be dumb not to and contract has been agreed just releasing it bit later.

I'm thinking  JB has 17m to sign Hughes, Petterson, Juolevi and Dickinson.

I excluded Bailey, Hunt, Di Giuseppe and Dowling as they will be AHL bound.

I think he learned from the OEL / Taffoli /Tanev debacle last year.

JB offered a fair price for Petterson and Hughes.

If Hughes and Petterson's agent (same guy) is playing hardball, JB will not stand idle. He will improve the team and use the cap space fully knowing only Petterson is eligible for an offer sheet.

This means his agent is either going to end up screwing Hughes OR both of his clients will end up with less money the longer they wait.

I'm ok with that.

I'm pretty annoyed with Hughes and his agent.

Petterson switched over to Hughes' agent and negotiations are dragging on.

Hughes as is is a one dimensional player. His position is defense yet he can't play D. He can rack up a lot of points though. He is a better version of Tyson Barrie.

I don't see why the Canucks at this point of Hughes career, need to back up the money truck and pay him while we also need to augment the entire defense to shelter him.

I would rather at this point propose a Hughes Dahlin trade and get a complete player who is a true number 1D that you can build around.

If Elias is being unreasonable, send him too.

Petterson and Hughes for Eichel and Dahlin (pending medical evaluation)

Eichel has a bulging disc in his neck (career ending) and Dhalin is a bustaroo bonsai.  These two players are horrid.  Petey we know is a super star, and was a ppg in the playoffs.  Quinn is another super star, who holds the record for most points ever by a rookie D in the playoffs.

We will sign them, and win Cups with them.

I would love to keep Petey but not fully sold on Hughes.

If Buf offered Dahlin for Hughes, I'd take it and run

This is what I'm expecting

Petey 7.85m

Hughes 5.85m

Dickinson 2.15m

Juolevi 1.1m

I feel like Petey and Hughes' agent is pushing for over 8 and 6 which means Dickinson and Juolevi have to be signed for less...

My guess is that Dickinson and Juolevi are also not signed in the event that a Petey offer sheet comes in.

Dhalin is a slow footed and slow processing player.  Sabres would love to dump him for a superstar.

Relax, you or I know nothing of how negotiations are going.

i love Pettersson but i feel any player that holds their team hostage is really not worth having,

I agree in general.  Some negotiating tactics, even if legal, are pretty darn annoying if not unethical, and even perhaps a test of character.  However, we don't really know what is going on behind the scenes.  Maybe he's holding the team hostage, and that would really suck on a lot of levels, but maybe there is something else going on to delay it.  We fans are all on pins and needles waiting for this deal to get done so it is easy to imagine the worst but let's maybe hope for the best and that Petey is loyal and not greedy.  The problem is the agents though, even when the player has his head screwed on right, which I think is the case in Petey, the agents often take negotiation tactics too far and neither benefit their client nor the team (and laugh all the way to the bank).  GCG!

You know, Alf, I was just thinking about how cool it would be to have an Alf reaction option, similar to the Eriksson one, but as a cool factor, of course. Which mods do we need to tag to make this happen? Vintage? Someone else?

Aside from that, hearing Dhaliwal speak every day about how close and constructive negotiations are sounds very positive. But, he also says it's so close (like 500k) that Benning should just sign them already. Knowing how Dhaliwal is a pipe organ for their agent makes me believe that Benning is playing some big league hard ball. I hope for two things: 1) we sign them 2) we don't disgruntle the two players.

some of this is for show. These so-called super agents do this crap all the time, they like to create anxiety over losing players to try to force better deals, but really at the end off the day maybe its a small % of what it would have been otherwise. A lot of ego involved here.

I like Jim's approach, he doesn't seem phased at all, so we shouldn't be either. Playing into agent created anxiety doesn't help anyone.
