Jim is playing an interesting game with these two. He has used up the cap space to the point where if Petey gets paid too much Hughes might have to take a qualifying offer.

Would he try to force his young star to play one year for peanuts?

I guess he can with Petey and Hughes having the same agent.

That being said, he hasn't signed Juolevi or Dickinson maybe just in case?

not sure the math checks out on that. We should have close to 20 mil to play with once a couple of guys are sent down, and you include LTI. That should be enough even for a long term Petey deal, a bridge for Hughes, and getting Dickinson and OJ re-signed.

Yeah, still lots of important RFA’s left to sign - Gear & Weisbrod are probably earning there $ during these negotiations.

He is. The thing i dislike about him the most is his willingness to have guys miss camp. That can really mess with a guys season.

More than enough.   Any number of Mac, Dowling, DiGiuseppe, Bailey, Hunt, and Rathbone can be sent to Abby.   That can add up to $4.8m, depending on who they keep as extras.  Having their AHL team close by means they probably won't have to carry as many extras.    Maybe 13fws (Bailey) and 7ds (Schenn).  That still leaves $3m + $3.5m (LTIR) +$14m and that's how Jimmy comes up with...

$20m cap space for the Canucks!  No need to worry Nuckfans.  JB's got it sorted.

JB made moves to secure his job for the short term. The team will likely pay for it in the long term.

Yes, it's almost a given that RFA:s that miss camp and the start of the season will pay for it by having a bad year since it usually takes them most of the remaining season just to catch up.

There are exceptions or course, but not everyone is Kucherov, Mario Lemieux or Peter Forsberg and can step right in without missing a beat.

JB is doing what his boss has told him to do.  Get this team into the playoffs.

The moves he did now had suited us better last year when we had two years left on their contracts. Now it was only one year we saved. So we missed one year of play off hockey because Benning missed out on a lot last season.

Now Benning was forced to do some mayor changes because other teams were interested in both Hughes and Petey.

Wich led to our perfect position now to sign our star players.

I agree and what he has done may well accomplish that. I just think it will have negative implications to building a perennial winner.  Shirt term gain for long term pain.

Last season was a disaster with covid restrictions and the bubble.  AZ would have never done the recent trade.

Why would JB be forced to do major changes because other teams were interested in Hughes/Pete?  Btw, teams can't offer sheet Hughes.  Of course there are teams that would be interested in Pete, but that doesn't mean they will.

Yes, JB is in a perfect position to sign them.  They certainly have the $.  These things take time.  Luckily the season doesn't start until Oct.

Well, if Benning just had 10 mill over before signing Hughes and Petey he might get forced to either let Petey get offer sheeted or trade away Hughes.

Hughes had interest from other clubs even though he can’t be offer sheeted.

Nothing any one if us wants.

Nucks have $14m in cap space, $3.5 LTIR (Ferland) and several players that will be sent down to the farm team.  If he needs more money to sign Pete, Quin and Garland, he has it ($20m).
