unfortunately mandatory minimums turned out to be unconstitutional, thats why it was scrapped.

I do think part of the problem is an unnecessary fight between rural and urban folks, which only serves the interests of various political groups and not gun owners or people in the city. Trudeau's policies might be useless but so are O'Toole's, both want to whip up fear and/or anger tor their "side" but in reality its just a vote grab either way.

Rural gun owners do have the problem of convincing the majority tho, which may not be fair but it is what it is. So when someone says something like "we're legal gun owners" no reasonable person in the city is suggesting otherwise or thinks rural use is the problem, people in the city know its a gang issue and not some farmer, e.g.

It would be good to have some kind of town hall where the political divisiveness could be set aside and people who are effected by the issue can try to figure out actual solutions instead of vote grabbing slogans.

I don't believe anyone in the gun lobby has the right idea either, if they did we would have heard it by now.

So how do you propose rural gun owners convince city people about legal firearms?  It sounds like my aunt. She hates guns, doesn't think anyone should own one and most importantly doesn't know a thing about firearms or Canadian firearm laws. Any facts you tell her don't matter her mind is made up.

I've noticed that the people against guns the most are the people who absolutely know nothing about them, just like Alf.  They think a black 22 with a pistol grip is a military weapon FFS.  How do you reason with that?

Very simple solution:

No citizen (other than police) need hand guns.  The only firearm a citizen should legally be able to own is a hunting rifle.

Police find a person in possession of a hand gun, and its serious jail time.  Commit a crime with any firearm, and it’s throw away the key time.

I agree lock up people who commit crime with weapons for a very long time. The rest of your post is one of the stupidest things I heard. You should take a RPAL course, range safety test and educate yourself about them if you want people to take you seriously

I'm not sure exactly, all I know is the onus is on gun owners to convince the non-gun owners about safety. That may not be fair, but its the reality of the situation.

I know that the fake political fighting isn't helping anyone but the politicians. All the CPC and gun lobby have done is make things worse and even more dug in on all sides, and the Lib's actually haven't got anything done on the file yet.

Gun owners need to take the high road and try to come out with better education, somehow. I would think trying to lead the way in better gun laws that are focused on everyone's safety would be the place to start.

I remember arguing with someone on here about the murders that took place in NS recently, and how there were reports by credible people that the shooter had a potentially illegal stockpile. I think we need to change the laws to allow police to follow up on that kind of info, but the person arguing against that thought it shouldn't be allowed. If gun owners can figure out an approach to things like this that would go a long way to helping everyone.

I do agree. Having guns should never be considered a 'right', but a privilege. And people who have guns must live by a higher standard, which includes how weapons should be handled/stored. When a gun is misused regardless if they're a gun owner or not, they should face the same penalties as if they are a gun owner. Simply saying they didn't know is not an excuse.

And if it's a minor that used it, the parents should be penalized as if they had a negligent discharge.
