Guy is a top 5-10 D in the league. Karlsson and Doughty set the bar for top UFA D at $11m+ like 3 years ago.

 

One could argue this IS a discount.

Certainly the stats side supports that argument.

 

Looking at Evolving Hockey’s SPAR, McAvoy has already provided $47.1M total team value over his four seasons to-date ($11.775M annual average).

And even if you reject fancy stats, I think the eye test alone puts him squarely in the elite tier for defencemen, regardless of analytics.
