Which is the worst contract that was signed in the summer of 2021?

 

Okay let the debates continue.  It's only been a few games, but which one is trending to be the worst one of 2021?

 

I hope nobody picks the first two players on the list...

This was a tough choice between Seth Jones and Nurse. Went with Jones in the end though because of what they had to give up as well as the contract itself.

Jones is now leading the race for the Green Jacket at -10.  Hate the Hawks, so it’s nice to see them give up so much to get Jones and then sign him to that team killing anchor contract.

I think Jones could work out long term. If he's the elite franchise Dman we all expect he could have a career like Brent Burns, Mark Giordano, or Shea Weber. Where they have lost a step but are still serviceable dmen relative to their contracts

The thing is, I don't think Jones is an elite franchise dman. I think he's overrated and not even close to being worth that contract. Jones is only 27 and should be in his prime. He's not worth the contract now and he definitely won't be by the end of it.

The Nurse contract isn't great but at least he can be a tough physical defenseman to play against.

 

For me it's Blake Coleman, zero chance he plays to that potential and very likely he eventually gets bought out.

I don’t mind the Coleman deal. Excellent defensive player who also scores 15-20 even strength goals per year. He’s basically the same level as a decent 2nd C, making less percentage of the cap than Canucks gave Sutter (on his previous deal). Contract is too long, but think he’ll hold up better than Hyman.

 

But the answer is Jones. Just brutal.

Right now it's Seth Jones, and that makes zero sense to me. 

He's a way better defenceman than that.

Just a really bad team.  

Khiara, a decent 4th line depth player is on their second line.

Toews has lost a step after COVID and is just hurting the team.

For me it's Jones.

 

Kane and Toews will be on their way out in the next 3-5 years and he'll basically be the person shouldering the team.  He can't do it now and sure won't do it then.

 

Would have said Nurse but Nurse is at least semi responsible and will have a team of all star forwards to mask any issues for the next 5-6 years of his contract

Jones, Hyman, and Danault are the big three bad ones IMO. I picked Danault. I think he won't replicate his Montreal magic in LA.

 

I'm in the minority that thinks Nurse's contract is a bit rich, but not as bad as many make it out to be. He's better than many think.

Columbus got a solid return and dumped a guy that just wanted $. Worst contract by a mile. Even if Jones plays the way he can he’s not worth it. The offence is not there even if he’s turns solid again defensively
