Hodgson was a loss but when he started failing we traded him for kassian and Kassian’s addiction issues got the best of him here... so it all played out.
- Jake never lived up to his potential... character issues and the fanbase/organization didn’t seem to want to part with him, he had some okay seasons. nothing great. It is what it is.

-Joulevi is the biggest bust because he should have never been a top 5 overall pick. He was a benefactor of playing on a London Squad featuring Dvorak, Marner and Tkatchuk. There was much better D-men available at his Spot (Sergachev, Macavoy & Chychrun). This fanbase incredibly defended him as a top 5 pick... true top 5 picks don’t need 5-7 years to develop. What did he have? 12 nhl games maybe on the 3rd pairing. In a league that’s getting younger and faster and 95% of players are done by age 34...... Joulevi is the modern day definition of a bust... and probably the highest drafted player in the last 10 drafts to bust.

Hodgson was far from failing. He was playing his first full season and put up 33 points in 63 games in a 3C role before being traded in what I believe was his age 21 season. Our management was probably overwhelmed from Boston's physical play and traded him for Kassian.

Having a miss in the first round in a single year shouldn't hurt a team too extensively.

That is why imo the consecutive misses from 2007- 2012 are what have hurt this team the most. The Canucks are still recovering from this.

We could have developed him further and he would have been better for it. Same with Micheal Grabner who wasn't a bust either.

True.  Though we still miss that center who can handle some of the duties that Horvat is forced to take.

Win some lose some. No GM is perfect but the hits have to outweigh the misses in order to be a successful GM at drafting and to help translate success on the ice.

Boston hit a homerun in 2014 with Pasta but 2015 they literally had 3 strikeouts with the 13th 14th and 15th overall picks with the only non-bust being Debrusk. Missed out on a bunch of good players(Connor, Barzal, Konecny, Boeser, Chabot) after those picks. Probably would have beaten STL had they drafted 3 of those players.

Canucks have been average at drafting under Benning. Maybe above average. Some big misses and some big successes. Not really anyone to pan out yet in the later rounds yet save for Forsling and maybe Rathbone. IDK what to think about Gaudette as he lost the success he once had. We've done good in the 2nd round though with Hoglander/Demko. As of now a starting goalie and a top 9 player out of the five 2nd round picks Bennings has drafted. Woo/Gadjo/Lind might turn out to be something but that's still to be determined.

Hopefully we keep our picks moving forward. Our prospect pool has grown a little bare with the graduates, traded picks and lost prospects(waivers/expansion). Maybe if we have to trade Miller down the line we can stock up on picks/prospects. Keep a steady flow of solid youngsters in the system. Help us to be successful long-term.

There’s no one else(except the last 2-3 drafts) that played fewer games than Joulevi, drafted top 5 overall.

A part of that is because of the back to back serious injuries he had that derailed his development but yeah not a good look.

Grabner was his own worst enemy.  Even being traded to the Panthers didn’t get thru to him (couldn’t crack the lineup of a really bad Panthers team).  Then even after he had a breakout year, it didn’t take long for him to go back to his old ways (look at all the teams he’s been on).  Now he’s on the Yotes.

This for sure.. Starting the rebuild with a knackered aging, largely worthless core and a empty prospects cupboard is the largest contributor to the 8 years of pain.

Honestly, probably Juolevi. Although I am still pulling for him, leading up to the draft I wanted Tkachuk--and it looks like that would have been the right move.

I still think that if the sexual assault case didn't happen, Virtanen would have turned into a player for us. Looks like he's doing really well in the KHL.

Mike Gillis fans over stated his issues to legitimize the Ballard trade. He was an all-star for the Islanders and won the skating competition.

He got 34 goals the year after we traded him. He got 27 and 25 goals in 2016/1718/19. If we kept him on this team the whole time, he would have been solid for us IMO. He played in the NHL for 12 years.

In a league where the average career is 5 seasons, that’s not too shabby and he almost got 300 career points.

Guy wouldn’t work hard enough to even make the Panthers squad who were Arizona bad at the time.  You think a guy like Vigneault would play that guy?  Not a chance.  I never mentioned Ballard in the post your posting of mine so I’m not sure why you’re trying to shoehorn a point I never made,

Both Gillis & Benning had chances to sign this guy for free via free agency.
