In all seriousness though, I want nothin to do with Tkachuk. 

 

If you think what went on in the Ottawa negotiation was a pain in the ass just wait til you've got to negotiate with Matthew.

I like Tkachuk, he's big strong and talented. But no I don't think either of these trades make us better. I agree with what you said, it makes the Canucks bigger for sure. However, I think we lose offensive in this trade. Sure at the moment Tkachuk is better than Peaty, but Brock is better than Monahan and is a proven 25-30 goal scorer with the potential of being more. 

With Hughes I know everyone hits on his defensive play, but we can't ignore or downplay what he excels at and that's offense. The guy is elite in that area and on a terrible team (which we are this year, no doubt) he still has 14 points in 15 games. Chychrun (a stud and amazing player) has 2 points in 15 games (also a bad team too). Not saying Hughes is better, but I rather we keep the elite offensive defensemen we've never had before and look at other ways to improve our defensive ability. Players like Tanev and Larsson are much more affordable pieces that can help steady out a backend. A young player like Rathbone with a couple good seasons under his belt might be worth something alone at that point to help us. 

 

The main point being I know a lot of fans are writing off our core. I get it they've not been playing good at all and if Peaty, Brock and Hughes are busts then of course this trade would be a steal when looked back on. 

 

But I don't think that's the case. I'm not ready to write off this core over a bad season. I know that means we could end up with a bunch of busts and no prospects and having to start a rebuild over again. Yet what if they bounce back, because there are plenty of examples where they are good. These kids have had seasons of good play and promise. I still think if this team can regain their confidence and play hard they will win games. 

 

So I'd rather we see a change in coaching and give it another shot instead of blowing up the core. I know it's a risk, but one I'd vote we take.

So the answer to our problems is to bring in a dirty player who is an absolute goof on the ice, a lazy passenger player in Monahan that most Flames fan want gone, and basically gifting Arizona all of our young mobile puck moving defenseman for a guy who is one of the biggest disappointments in the league this season, right up there with Petry (trust me, i know, I drafted both in fantasy).....

Not to mention both CGY and ARI would accept these offers in a second. And laugh at us after hanging up the phone. 

Glad you're not the GM, is my conclusion. Lol.

On the HFBoards, they’ve got a Tkachuk for Pettersson thread going on their T&R section. If you add in Boeser and Monahan to that, I think you’ll have a pretty decent deal.  Tkachuk would add to our grit up front and would definitely help us score some goals (unlike Petey and Boeser), while Monahan could anchor our 3rd line and move Dickinson to a more natural winged position.  The Canucks would get significantly bigger with this deal.

1) Forget about my Arizona deal.

 

2) Tkachuk might be a dirty player and a good, but he achieves on ice results. Can the same be said about Petey and Boeser right now?  Furthermore, the presence of Tkachuk, alongside Miller and Horvat, would likely make size as one this teams’ strengths.  
 

3) Monahan would basically be our/their version of Boeser, but he can play center.  In Calgary, Monahan is getting 3rd line minutes but is still producing at the same clip as Petey.
