Completely forgot that a couple of our national team members play professionally in Turkiye.

Atiba Hutchison was safe in Istanbul when the quake hit, but Sam Adekugbe was in the earthquake zone in Antakya, the city where he plays football for club Hatayspor. (You may have read about SA's teammate, Christian Atsu being found alive in the rubble. Atsu is a Ghanaian International)

Luckily, Adekugbe was able to get to safety and is now in Istanbul with Hutchison:

Quote

Canadian soccer player Sam Adekugbe was one of the lucky ones. He managed to escape earthquake-ravaged Antakya in Turkey.

Some of his teammates and staff at his club Hatayspor are still missing. The 28-year-old from Calgary is now safe in Istanbul with Canada captain Atiba Hutchinson, who plays for Besiktas. But he tells a harrowing tale of being caught in the quake.

Adekugbe was relaxing at home with some teammates after a Turkish league game Sunday evening. The quake began as he started cleaning up his home when they left.

He went outside to find the road split and people yelling. After seeing the damage at his home, he drove the 20 minutes to the team training ground, seeing the devastation along the way — collapsed buildings, fires, people crying, digging in rubble.

Adekugbe says people are still missing, including the team's sporting director. There is confusion over the whereabouts of Ghana international Christian Atsu, who was at Adekugbe's home that night.

Antakya is located 1,100 kilometres southeast of Istanbul in a region bordered by the Mediterranean and Syria.

The Canadian Men's National team starts playing its first games since the World Cup.

They'll be continuing their play in something called the CONCACAF Nations League, a tournament that actually began in the Spring of 2022, paused, and is now set to continue.  Apparently, that's its format.

Canada will be playing Curacao on March 25 and Honduras on March 28.  I think the games will be televised on OneSoccer.

Info on Canada's team roster can be found here:

After defeating Curacao 2-0 in the CONCACAF Nations League tournament game on Saturday, the Canadian Men's National Team plays Honduras tomorrow - Tuesday - 5pm,  in Toronto.  If they draw or win they will win their group and will play in the four team playoffs in June.

Granted, the CONCACAF Nations League tournament isn't the World Cup, but a trophy is a trophy.

The game should be on OneSoccer and FUBO.

I think Canada is pretty happy with their draw for the Gold Cup this summer:

The Canadian side will be joined in Group D by Guatemala, Cuba and a qualifier between Guadeloupe, Guyana, Grenada, or Trinidad and Tobago.

The bad news is, it looks like Canada will play it's games at BMO Field. No love for Vancity....

The Concacaf Nations League semi-finals are on tomorrow (Thursday) in Las Vegas.

Canada plays Panama at 4pm.

US plays Mexico at 7pm.

The losers will play each other for 3rd and 4th place on Sunday at 3pm.

Winners will play each other for the trophy on Sunday at 5:30 pm.

Since it's only soccer, none of the games are scheduled for network tv.  But they will be available on Fubo/OneSoccer.

And reports are that this tourney will be Atiba's last matches.

Canada 2 Panama 0

Goals by our main men - David & Davies.

Some nice saves from Borjan.  This was not a one-sided game.

Have to add:  it was a well-reffed game.  The ref let a lot of stuff go by both sides which other refs might have called.  Created a nice flowing game.

On to the Final on Sunday against either the US or Mexico.

Seems this is important; we have our top guys playing. What exactly is this tournament?

It's a fairly new competition that was created to get rid of largely useless friendlies.  Because of Covid, the format was kinda changed for this run.  Its supposed to have the members of CONCACAF divided into leagues.  The top teams in League A play for the trophy.  The bottom ones get relegated into League B.  The top teams in League B get promoted to League A.  The US won the 1st edition.  Mexico was 2nd.  Honduras was 3rd.  Costa Rica was 4th.

We are in the final.  We play the winner of USA vs Mexico.

The European finals are also happening this Sunday.   Croatia vs Spain.
