Hughes had a remarkable year but I'd still call Demko our MVP, if not for him we'd have never gone on that run and we'd have been in a much deeper hole after the first few months

Folks look at our record after December and spout off about winning percentage but the reality is we had the same slow starts we did under Green and our defensive play continued to be sloppy, Demko covered a lot of warts for this club

Sometimes it'd take us a period of two to get going and he'd be the only reason we were still in it

Slow starts have haunted this franchise forever. Frustrating as hell and I'm convinced it's something to do with the West Coast lifestyle, lol.

Why are you assuming that's the case?

Looking at what similar guys have got as just rentals at TDL's, anyone could see that a late first is never the best piece.

Feels like you're attempting to build a narrative there...

And if we are in the playoffs at the 2023 TDL (or fighting for a spot) will our owner allow a Miller Trade?  IMHAO our owner is why we didn’t trade Miller at the 2022 TDL.  Why else did JR take Miller off the market two weeks before that 2022 TDL?

Maybe what’s best for our team’s future is to have another slow start to the coming season?

Could be, hard to say

The other consistent is that we don't play well in front of backups

This year we don't have TG still evaluating the lineup 20 games into the season. I suspect that lesson has been fully learned now.

I see the same bad start coming.  Going to be lots of drama around Miller.  He’s going to be off the charts angry, stick breaking, frustrated Miller.

Demko is the only player, and I mean only, that this franchise couldn't survive losing at this point.   Every other major piece could be removed for whatever reason and we'd find somehow to get by.  But without Demko we're barely a competitive team on a nightly basis lat alone in a WC conversation.

Demko was fantastic but Miller willed most of this team’s victories, both on and off the ice. Miller is the only lion on this team that was otherwise full of domestic cats.

Will be very interesting to see how the management/coaching staff approach camp and the start of the season this fall considering it was the first several months of the season last year that essentially ruined our playoff chances.

I actually think we’re going to start fast and I’ll have to endure the “keep JT” crowd shouting “I told you so”

That’s fine though!  The trade crowd are concerned about the long term outlook of the team and not so much the start of next season.

no he didn't and from mid January on, he was probably the 5th best player after Demko, Petey, Horvat and Hughes

what would the "i told you so" be referring to?

Agree to disagree on this one.  Miller could've outscored McDavid and we'd still be nowhere without Demko.  This team, as it's built right now, couldn't be competitive on a nightly basis without Demko.

See!  Look how great we are with JT!  We are like totally ready to contend for the cup right now!  All of you wanted to pretend like the second half of last season was a fluke!  You all just wanted us to be in a constant rebuild.

lol trust me.  That nonsense is right around the corner.

not every UFA situation is a disaster tho. In general sure you want to retain some assets if possible, but every year guys walk to UFA and teams don't collapse. If the best part of a deal is a late 1st I just don't care.

Boeser was drafted at 23rd.

So was Shinkaruk. If you look at the success rate of later picks its not great.

"the success rate drops massively from pick 25 to pick 31, and then it stays at a similar level for the entire second round. "https://dobberprospects.com/2020/05/16/nhl-draft-pick-probabilities/

We can play the picks game all day. If we were rebuilding I'd say sure, get all the picks you can. But we aren't rebuilding.

Gotcha...........that would be a lame "I told you so" as I think those of us advocatiing a miller deal are the ones who give him the highest value.  Many in the "keep miller" crowd clearly don't think he's an elite player, or don't expect him to be paid like one

Hughes was our best player, and continues to be our best player.  Miller is an okay player, but we really will not miss him much.

TRADE MILLER!  Get cap space and a couple picks.

hey what happened to your bottles predicting we're going to re-sign Miller?
