What does future considerations actually refer to? Is it just another way of saying for free?

Yes. Or at most an "I owe you one".

In this case Chicago was probably just happy to get rid of the contract slot and extra body.

Yeah, I'm not even sure if it actually has any real value. Do teams/GMs actually keep track of the future considerations and hold others to them?

Sometimes it turns into a late pick, or an upgrade on a future deal. Sometimes it turns out to be a wash.

But I did find it funny that Subban is making more in the AHL than any of the Sabres goalies in the NHL.

All the hype about the Subban family sure went up in smoke, at least Malcom got a couple seasons in as a backup

Well, and the Norris trophy, Gold Medals, All-Star Games, potential HoF discussion and being a key voice in the struggle for respect and equality for minorities within hockey...
