AV.
Here's the truth. Gillis had an elite tenure. Got things done, won many things, nearly won it all in fact, but eventually his shortcomings caught up to him and he was rightfully sacked. Benning was good on the day of his opening press conference and that's it. Huge downhill spiral into Buffalo and Arizona territory under his leadership. Lost everything, became the laughing stock of the NHL, has sent fans into depression, made the Whitecaps become the best team in Vancouver. The damage he caused will take YEARS to repair. Benning and Wiesbrod were worse than Keenan and Messier.

He has left the franchise in far better shape than Gillis did after being gifted the core. Neither of them were good overall, but calling a GM who was on the same level as Dubas and Millbury elite isn't the way go get yourself taken seriously. It has been almost a decade and still Gillis has not gotten another job in an NHL front office. The reason for that is he is not qualified for the position and has proven himself to be grossly incompetent. Let's move forwards instead of backwards and stop pretending that the way Gillis drafted and traded was acceptable.

Whether that was his choice, or a mandate from ownership, he didn't do a great job. His blunders started from his first entry draft and continued right until the day he was sacked. Horrible throughout with very little bright spots to show for. As for Gillis not getting another job, we can reasonably believe that's been by choice. It's been well documented that he wants a greater role within organizations if he returns to the NHL, and every so often, we see him in the frame for those positions. It has very little to do with a lack of qualifications. Funny enough, Benning is a great example that no amount of qualifications or extensive experience makes one competent for the job. I'm more than happy to leave Gillis in the past, but I won't sit aside watching people defend Benning by trying to compare him to Gillis. Gillis was a far better GM than Benning was here, even if both aren't particular great GMs. Those are the facts.

No, those are your opinions. We don't need you defending Gillis after his successor was replaced, just as we don't really need to debate how well Nonis did. It doesn't need to be in every thread. Why talk about Gillis or Benning at all? It was your pal that brought this discussion up. Who are ”we” by the way?
48MPHSlapShot
Up until Smyl's legendary run as the only undefeated GM in NHL history, this team hadn't had a good GM since Burke.
