[Proposal] Trade with TOR, looking towards next season

Recommended Posts

Proposed trade is

To VAN: Kampf + Dermott

To TOR: Motte (50% retained) + Burroughs

Why for VAN?

Motte is our best 4th line forward right now, but his contract expires this season and he is often injured. Lockwood appears to be our long term replacement for Motte. What we lack is a legitimate 4C that is strong on faceoffs and PK. Kampf is 26 years old, 6'2", getting 17% oZ starts this season, is 54.9% in faceoffs, plays between 14-15 mins per game. Has logged 71 mins of short-handed play and only had 3 goals scored against in that time. So he's a faceoff master and an excellent PKer. He is signed for $1.5m through next season too.

Burroughs has been a pleasant surprise in VAN and I love his gritty game, but when we're healthy we have 5 RHD on our roster and we lack a legit LHD for our third pairing. Dermott is 24 years old, has decent size (6'0" and 202lbs) and is a 2-way Dman. Also signed for $1.5m this season and next season and then is RFA. He balances our roster better and also gives Rathbone another year to develop in the AHL or to be our 8th Dman without the pressure of having to play every night. Dermott is comfortable playing 13-15 mins per game and he can PK. Has the ability to step up in case of injury and can fill on on RD if needed.

Why for TOR?

Cap space. When Marner returns from LTIR the Leafs will struggle to ice a 23-man roster of their best players. Motte and Burroughs are good enough to replace the loss of Kampf and Dermott, but because they are cheaper they will allow the Leafs to fit their roster under the cap limit. The retention on Motte only lasts this season, so there is no carry over of retention next season.

I know what @Alflives will say but what do you think?

Dermott is not an NHL quality defenceman.

He can handle 3rd pairing fine. I'm not sure how you can say that after 200+ games, averaging 16 mins and career +/- of +25, he isn't NHL quality. He certainly can be overmatched if given too much ice time, but he is fine if limited to a 3rd pairing and PK role, which is all we would require behind OEL and Hughes. Quite cheap too for a 24 year old that can play those minutes.

He's played that many games because the only NHLers on Toronto's blueline are Muzzin and Brodie.  He's absolute trash; we have guys still in Abbotsford who are better.

If that were true then he would have a shed load more goals scored against while on the ice...don't believe the hype

They still have Kerfoot as 3C and Spezza as 4C

Perhaps, but the exact reasons you've given for us to acquire Kampf are the exact reasons they'd want to keep him. Kerfoot and Spezza strike me as miscast as PK centers.

Motte at 50% is a nice piece, but bottom six center's are important to a team with cup aspirations. Not sure they'd go for this one.

He's gotten lucky.  He's almost as bad as Rielly in his own zone; neither even approach an acceptable standard.

Guys get lucky in 10 games, not in 200 games. Anyway, you're entitled to your opinion. Appreciate the feedback, cheers

Maybe not. I don't really care what they want or not. They will have to trade someone to remain compliant though or fake someone else on LTIR until the playoffs

Kampf has been solid for the Leafs this year, they value him over Motte.

How would this help Toronto? Yeah, they'd get Motte but then they'd have a hole at 4c. If they've got cup aspirations why would they move out their PK center?

Exactly this.
