The Columbus Blue Jackets have suspended forward Gregory Hofmann, General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.

"Gregory was given permission by the club to step away for personal reasons and informed us today that because of those reasons he has decided not to return," said Kekalainen. "Obviously, we are disappointed, but we have no other recourse than to suspend him."

Hofmann, 29, was acquired in a trade from the Carolina Hurricanes on Feb. 13, 2021 and signed a one-year contract with the Blue Jackets on June 14, 2021 after spending the previous 11 seasons in Switzerland's NLA. He appeared in 24 games with the club, registering two goals and five assists for seven points with eight penalty minutes and a +6 plus/minus rating. His last appearance with the team was December 14 at Vancouver.

If he wants to go back to Switzerland, I don't blame him. It's beautiful there. Expensive as hell, but beautiful.

Yeah, he's a Swiss League superstar. Much like Nikita Gusev and Vadim Shipachyov from the KHL, I think it's really hard for these superstar Euroleague players to transition into being third line NHLers/bottom six/fringe NHLers.

Also, in Europe, most living expenses are paid for by the team so they're taking home way more cash than they would playing for an NHL club even if they're, in theory, making more than what they're making in the SHL/NLA/KHL/Liiga/etc.

I won't be shocked if Hofmann is put on unconditional waivers in the next couple of weeks.

Sounds like a situation similar to Tryamkin.

He brought his wife over but she doesn't speak much English and didn't really like it. They just had a newborn baby and she went back to Switz to live with family.

Doesn't seem to be anything nefarious, it just didn't work.

Sometimes it be like that

Can't blame a guy for prioritizing family
