Tsunami Advisory for Notification Zones A, B, C & D: Volcanic Eruption near the Tonga Islands. January 15, 2022.

A volcanic eruption has occurred near the Tonga Islands resulting in a Tsunami Advisory for the north coast and Haida Gwaii, the central coast and northeast Vancouver Island, the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, the Juan de Fuca Strait coast.

Preliminary Parameters

The following parameters are based on a rapid preliminary assessment and changes may occur.

  • Event: Volcanic Eruption
  • Depth: 1 miles
  • Location: Tonga Islands
  • Origin Time: 2027  PST Jan 14 2022
  • Coordinates: 20.5 South 175.4 West

Notification Zones:

This Tsunami Advisory includes the following zones of coastal British Columbia:

Forecast of Wave Activity Arrival Times:

  • Langara: 0830  PST Jan 15
  • Tofino: 0850  PST Jan 15

Recommended Actions:

People in coastal areas that are at risk are advised to stay away from the shoreline and heed instructions from local authorities.

If you are in a tsunami advisory area:

  • Do not go to the shore to observe the tsunami.
  • Move out of the water, off the beach, and away from harbors, marinas, breakwaters, bays and inlets.
  • Be alert to and follow instructions from your local emergency officials because they may have more detailed or specific information for your location.
  • Do not return to the coast until local emergency officials indicate it is safe to do so.
  • Boat operators: where time and conditions permit, move your boat out to sea to a depth of at least 180 feet; if at sea avoid entering shallow water, harbors, marinas, bays, and inlets to avoid floating and submerged debris and strong currents.

What would be supremely hilarious in a very morbid sort of way would be if those artificial islands that the ccp has created in the South China Sea were totally wiped out by the tsunami created by this eruption, and all the human-built infrastructure on the land developed by damaging the coral reefs there were sunk into the sea, in a "never rebuildable" sort of way.

That would be tragic. But at the same time rather fitting.

You state tragic in the future conditional tense, but the tragedy has already happened and continues to happen.  All that natural coral is likely to be irreversibly damaged.

Fitting, though, it would be if the human activity there were to abruptly cease because it suddenly found itself below sea level again.

Tragic if there's people living on those islands. Humans have a tendency everywhere of wiping out the local environment to put in homes. Doesn't make it right.

If all humanity was gone, the Earth would heal. But humans would have left deep scars.

Mother nature is really upping her side of the war on climate change eh?

Covid and this tsunami is really kicking her immune system on overdrive.

A reminder that we’re all at her mercy.

Better start treating her right.

Here is vid of suspected tsunami wave in Tofino but its hard to say as its high tide already. (2nd video shows a possible surge up almost to the logs)

I see this all the time, but I have never understood this societal need of people to “see for themselves” the “insert disaster/accident here”. It only endangers their own lives and those of who may have to rescue you afterwards. Obviously this was a very small wave ripple, but what if forecasters got it wrong and it was 10 feet high? Every single one of those people on camera would be dead or fighting for their lives just because they had to go look.
